I recently purchased a 2001 X1 with 14k miles. found a large leak coming from the primary cover. I pulled the cover off and i didnt pay any attention to the timing. I need help!

Do you have a service manual? I'm not to sure, but I don't think there are any "timing" issues relating to the primary drive. As I recall when I pulled my primary drive cover (to rebuild my starter) the only real concern was getting the tension correct after I put the cover back on.

The only "timing" issue is to make sure you put the gasket on before the cover ; )
Make sure you have the new updated (beefier) primary chain tensioner. I think the changeover was 2001 sometime, not sure when. Search the board here for pictures of before and after...
