any difference in color between the midnight black and villain black body colors? Would anyone happen to have part numbers for the villain black bodywork (firebolt)?

the Villain Black looks more like a metallic dark dark charcoal in sunlight-my brother has an 2010 Firebolt http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/37/ 536015.jpg
you really notice the difference because his pass seat cowl came as midnight black

dont know the part #'s though

I have a '10 XB12R that is described as Villain Black. The '09 also was described as Villain Black.
The parts catalog for the '10 XB models lists all the bodywork as Midnight Black. So I am thinking that they are the same thing?
I downloaded the accessories catalog (now obsolete) and only Midnight Black is listed.

So was "Villain Black" just a marketing term? (gives it a sinister sounding name!).

My brother's 2010 XB12R Villain Black is definitely a different color than my '05 Midnight Black XB12Scg and my '09 Midnight Black 1125CR. The Villain Black on his bike more or less resembles the color on the wheels of my CR. It is possible that only a few Pieces came out as the different color explaining why his passenger set cowl matches the Midnight Black of both my bikes but not the fairing, airbox cover, and tail section of his bike.

For what its worth, the Villain Black does not exist anywhere as far as I can tell looking at the bodywork online.

Here are the part numbers off a 2010 XB12R

M1224.7AAMW INTAKE COVER KIT, MIDNIGHT BLACK W/DECAL Retail Price:$219.00
M1646.7AAMW FRONT FAIRING KIT,MIDNIGHT BLACK W/DECAL Retail Price:$132.00
M1664.7AAMW TAILSECTION KIT, MIDNIGHT BLACK W/DECAL Retail Price:$160.00

Those are the only "new" pieces (probably different decals), anything else was a carryover from previous years.

There was an argument not to long ago about the 2010 Villain Black and that Buell just changed the name and not the color.
The 2010 Villain Black is a pearl black and not Midnight Black.
If you look at the rear seat cover and front fender compared to the rest of the bike you will see a difference.

They look pretty much the same to me. There can be a slight variance in tint between the batches of various parts. My Hero Blue flyscreen is a hair darker than my airbox cover.

Froggy,
I've been here a while (not a noob) although I do not participate much outside of Stormfronts. I have come to appreciate and respect your insight and knowledge over the years and you have been extremely helpful on many subjects Buell. This particular subject however is one where if you have not seen it you wouldn't believe it. As stated by me above there is definitely a difference in the colors and not in the same sense as your example or even the translucent amber debate of wheels, levers and heel guards (of which I have first hand experience with). It is not a "tint" difference such as the Midnight Black on my CR is noticeably "greyer" than the Midnight Black on my Scg. This Villain Black on my brothers 2010 XB12R is much more "metallic" dark charcoal in hue in direct sunlight or bright direct artificial light. It reminds me of some of the colors used by BMW/MINI and Porsche of late where it does indeed look black in pictures but in person has metallic "dust" which turns it metallic dark grey. Having been a "mechanic" for GM and BMW/MINI I have witnessed several colors that cannot be accurately represented by photos (could be poor photography) and this color reminds me of the black used most recently by BMW/MINI as their Midnight Black.

I understand that according to your literature the color/part numbers are the same other than name, and through 18 years of utilizing parts for midyears and new models with midyear updates/changes can postulate many reasons for this, and am in no way trying to say that your current info is wrong, but somewhere/somehow Thekosack 2010 XB12R's Villain Black IS different and may be one of very few with this variation. As stated before the tail section cowl is a different color (not tint/hue) than the tail section, airbox cover and, fairing.

Again, Froggy,
your insight and info has been most appreciated and I feel as though I am questioning (I am most certainly not) your expertise/information/experience, but this is one of those "fluke/rare" times in history of all things where one subject is not like the others/past/or current available information states it should be. Sorry if I have offended (as it was not intended) and I apologize for all the disclaimers/generalizations but I've grown tired of all the "noobs" on the 1125 section that always take everything out of context and try to focus on only what they believe (which is the way I'm beginning to feel in this subjects regard), I just wish you could see this first hand and you would be scratching your head as my brother and I have since he purchased this anomaly. I'm just trying to correctly answer (just as are you) the initial question. At this point my brother would probably be better served to bubble wrap his "plastics" since as per your information he will never be able to replace them (again I feel like I'm offending-I am not intending to).

If ever there was a time I could be color blind.......I wouldn't be so adamant about this subject.

Froggy, as by me having a 2010 XB12R Firebolt there is a big difference between the color, if you cannot see the difference on the tail section and air box cover compared to the passenger seat cover on the last pic of my post, you just might need to get your eyes checked. The seat cover is Midnight Black, along with the front fender, the rest of the bike has a pearl in it. it's not a tint variance. As for part #'s I'll get those tonight from the parts catalog. The #'s online "I have found" have been wrong from time to time

Froggy,
My brother is a "noob" to Badweb and not meaning to offend please do not take it as such. As I have experience as of late, internet "tact" is different at differing sights and it is just assumed that everyone is calling everyone else an "idiot". I am not defending him-or you-just trying to defuse a misunderstanding before it tarnishes anyones standing.

Those who stay here long enough usually learn said tact, and the 1125 section definitely tries ones ability to use such tact, I type slow and my previous post probably was not noticed before his post.

Just trying to keep the peace and the information factual.

Sorry if I'm stepping on anyones toes.

Boy I sure am apologizing alot....

Froggy

As Torq has mentioned yes I am a "noob" and No I do not mean to offend, I am a bit harsh with words at times and at most when I'm passionate about what I speak. I have found myself defending my Buell perty much since I purchased it, and I turely love this bike. As I mentioned I do have the parts catalog at home and will look up the part #'s and post them if they differ from the ones you have found on line. If my bike is a fluke, and the Villain Black will no longer be a available part color, It would be best for me and all who have one of these bikes to know now to protect this rear color. As my brother Torq stated, It might be best for me to bubble wrap my body parts. With your help, I would like to find the answers for this Beautiful and odd color on my bike.
I do apologize if I sounded harsh or offensive in any way.

Froggy, I just looked trough the parts catalog, and have found the same information that you have posted. Are the 2010 Midnight Black part #'s the same as the 2009?

No need to apologize, I want the answers just as bad as you. I don't see any name calling or other insults going on : )

About the part numbers: I didn't get them out of a book or anything, I made them up and then just confirmed them against a online parts dealer to check if it was right. The part numbers have a pattern. The 3 part numbers I posted above are the only new bodywork on the 2010 Firebolt, the rest was carried over from previous years. The only difference should be the decals. Change the .7AA to .6AA for 2009 bodywork.

The last 2 characters on bodywork part numbers are the color codes. MW is Midnight Black, BX is Hero Blue, and so on. Often times, a color can have several names, like Sunset Orange and Sunburst Orange, Kick Ash and Hercules, Diamond Blue and Barracuda Blue. It wouldn't surprise me if that is the case with Villain Black and Midnight Black.

I do see the differences in the pieces of tail section and cover. Is the cover off the CR or did it come that way on the Firebolt?

Still, my best answer is that this is within the normal variance of the colors between batches. I don't have a better answer, I am not someone in the know or connected with Buell, so I wouldn't know where to ask around and find out.

Normally I would just say don't worry about the difference, as most of the body parts are far enough from each other that you wouldn't be able to tell a slight difference between a fender and tail section. Unfortunately when you got a pillion cover right on top of the tail section plastic, this is not the case.

The cover did indeed come on the XBR as delivered by the dealer. The color is indeed also very different and the "metallic" which I speak of looks that of some of Harley's dark grey but only in direct light and is definitely not nearly even remotely the same as the black we have come to know and love. I really wish there was an easier way to show/explain it.

The original intention was to get a set of spares when cash was more readily available, but it seems the earlier "joke" about bubble wrapping them may have to be an actual consideration and replacing them with the more common black, and then, at least the plastics would all match.

Thekosack and myself did not post the question but it sure does seem like we have now found that the color is not going to be easily replaced in the future.

Any other info you could find for us would be appreciated-really wish you could see what we see as I feel like we are about it but it is not a "normal" variance and normally I would agree with you even from my experiences in the auto industry (I can even go on for days on how a part can have different names depending on whether you are speaking to the tech, the parts, the warranty claim, the engineer, or technical assistance person) but this is definitely more than just a "whiter shade of pale"

Again, thank you in advance for any additional info you may or may not turn up in this

A friend of mine who use to work in parts at a Harley Dealer made a good point to me, the Villain Black body panels may only be listed in the Buell paint and body works catalog, as it might have been a custom color option for the XBR and was put on a few bikes. This is something that should be investigated! Unfortuantly the 2010 Buell paint and body works catalog might be as hard to find as the answer we all seek...
