My 2009 XB12XT Ulysses has been having problems fouling the front spark plug and generally running badly for a while now. It has 6000 Kms (3600 Miles) on it and the dealer is doing what they can to fix it. It will run great for about 300 miles and then when I try to start it on a cool morning, the front cylinder won`t fire. It is getting lots of fuel because it is igniting in the muffler when the hot exhaust gas from the rear cylinder hits it. It shows no engine codes and when it runs well, it runs great. Unfortunately, it has begun to fail more often as the miles roll on it.
When it came home from the dealer last time after having a new TPS and plugs installed, I started it in my garage (with the door open of course) to see how well it would start. It started OK but seemed to be running quite rich. A lot of black smoke when I revved it up to 1500 rpm. It was dark outside and as I was walking away from the bike I noticed the pipes were glowing red. The dealer says this is normal. I`m thinking there must be a problem with the plug wire, fuel injector or coil.
I was wondering if anyone else has pipes that glow like this when they start their bike cold.
Any chance this could be the cause of the plug fouling problems.

Wow, not kidding about glowing red...And the dealer says it is normal!!??
That's more a sign of a lean mixture not rich...Or may be something is clogged in the exhaust...Sorry can't help. |

Just got my bike back from the Dealer and they installed and reset a new TPS and kept the bike for a few day to make sure it was starting correctly. It was also overfilled with oil by about 1/2 quart so that may have been some of the problem. as Froggy says and the dealer confirms it, the new engine and EFI system runs very efficiently and therefore the pipes may glow when the bike is cold. Apparently it is not as prevalent on the older EFI as it is on the newer XB's. I don't know one way or the other but the bike seems to be working much better now. |
