If I had to guess, you have a cracked trace on your ECM circuit card.

On the front most retaining screw that holds the ECM to the bike, is there a rectangular plastic spacer that comes up higher than the ECMs surface? Ulys that don't have that are especially susceptible to cracked traces.

Are these serviceable or are they covered in epoxy?

So I pulled pin 5 today. It looks clean and sealed. I attached it directly to the pin on the ECM, nuttin. I did pin 1 as well. I'm noticing that as I take the plug out and put it back in repeatedly, that it takes a harder 'squeeze' on the assembly to fire the CEL/pump. My assumption now is that I have an ECM with internal physical damage that is getting worse as I fart around with it. I'm going to order a used ECM, (thanks, Chbritton) and see if that doesn't do the trick. Will post when I get it letting you all now the final(?) dispensation.

I'll take a look inside your current ECM if you want. Maybe it can be repaired, maybe not.

New (used) ECM on the way. I thought I better pull the map from the old ECM, and no matter how tight I squeezed that SOB, it wouldn't read. Finally, I squeezed the grey plug into the ECM with a channel lock, and it connected just long enough to download the map. So that, in my mind, seals the deal, it's a bad ECM, internal. Anybody ever take one of these apart as a science project? Which side is the PC board on? I could maybe saw off the other side for the collective edification.

I just received a spare XB9 ECM and it is filled with some kind of rubbery glue, I'm hoping it is hot glue (hot potting compound) so I can get the stuff out when your ECM arrives. I hate it when they do stuff like this, generally makes it completely throw away.

I wonder if they put it in there for damping effect?

It's anti tamper, waterproofing, anti short circuit, as well as anti vibration. Mostly anti tamper since we aren't supposed to get in and fix them or mess up the EPA approved status.

Today I received the used ECM. I installed it and when I hit the kill switch, the CE light went on and the fuel pump cycled. I hit the start button and she fired right up. I BELIEVE I correctly installed the map I ripped from the old ECM. So it was/is definitely the ECM. Good news, the problem is resolved, with a great deal of help from the board. Thanks guys. Bad news, it's going to be sunny for the next three days (rare in the Seattle area this time of year) but I'll be traveling on business until Friday afternoon. This means I won't have a ride report until Sat, and I won't be able to get the fried ECM out to Greg until then.

Cheers

Well folks, I must thank you for your assistance on this one. The new (used) ECM is installed, the old fuel map is uploaded. I took the Uly out for a test ride this afternoon. A short one, as it's in the 30s here in Seattle and there were patches of ice here and there...And as far as I can tell, the issue is fully resolved. I sent the old ECM to greg_e so he can attempt an autopsy.

I was thinking, on my ride, how different it was a few years back before the interenet. I'd have had to haul this thing into the shop and pay them for all this.

Badweb is a great asset and I sincerely hope it continues, despite the fate of the company that inspired it.

Way cool. Looking forward to getting the computer to take a look inside. Yes there will be pictures and hopefully some info on fixing other problems that may develop in the future. This is very important since the supply will eventually be very limited and there are few third party sources that really work.

Microsquirt has gone purely closed source and does not support these odd fire engines. The MegasquirtAVR project has gone closed source and does not work with these engines. The open source DIYEFI system is not really ready and could use some people helping to make it ready.

So after about 2 hours of pulling black rubber stuff off the circuit board, here is what I found. There was only a single bad solder joint on the connectors, and that was on the black connector on what looks like pin 11, top row, last pair to the left when you are looking at the connectors.

I still have some of the rubber to remove before I can check everything else.

I'll make a separate thread with pictures of the teardown.
