I have got my engine stripped completely for a crank re build on the x1, i have noticed there is a small amount of play (wobble) in the belt sprocket (with the transmission removed).
Is this normal or is any play unacceptable ?
thanks in advance .

Is there play with the sprocket nut properly tightened and locked?

If so, it may have loosened up because the nut was either overtightened or backed off to align the lockplate screw holes.

the nut is tight, have removed the trans.
i can wobble the sprocket, but there seems to be no up and down movement.

Take off the sprocket and see if the shaft (which is really the 5th gear drive assembly) wobbles.

I don't think any of it should have any play. Thats a big freaking bearing in there...

Now that I remember, my '96 S1 stripped its drive belt sprocket splines early in its life and was covered by warranty. I believe the dealer said that there was a run of sprockets that either had faulty heat treating or were not properly installed at the factory -- memory not so good with some details.

So, chances are that it's a defective sprocket and the shaft splines are OK.

sprocket is ok, the play is in the shaft,as i said you can grab the sprocket and rock it slightly, but there is no play if you try and lift the sprocket vertically or horizontally. the transmission is removed.

Is what you are saying is that the shaft bearing and the shaft in the bearing are OK, meaning there is no play with the shaft, but the sprocket itself wobbles on the shaft?

If that is true, then you need to remove the sprocket and inspect the splines on the shaft and the sprocket. One or the other is NOT OK.

the play is in the shaft, there is no play between the sprocket and shaft.
if play is a problem it will be down to the large shaft bearing. being a roller bearing is it normal to have a little wobble while the transmission is removed.

the crankcase halves are split and i would rather replace the bearing now before i put it all back together,
