Gents and Ladies -

Purchased a new '09 XB12X today from HD/Buell Lakeland of Florida (very straightforward team... good experience from my end). Rode it home today to Jacksonville, about 150 miles, on backroads to get some good break in mileage.

About 70 miles down the road, the bike quit and the check engine light came on. Turning ignition off then on normal diagnostics (engine light on 4 seconds then off), bike would turnover but not start. Quick call to the dealer, their mechanic quickly diagnosed a blown fuel pump fuse. He recommended I ride it back to the dealer so they could fix it. He said he had seen this on one other bike and it could end up being a prolonged discussion with the factory.

Seeing as how I had no easy way to get home once the bike was back at the dealer (my ride was long gone), I elected to buy some spare fuses and continue on my way home. There is a Buell dealer here after all who can handle the warranty work.

The remaining 80 miles home went without incident (other than extreme enjoyment on my part). Is this an issue others have seen before? I'm scheduled to take the MSF Experienced Riders Course Monday on the Buell (my other bikes really aren't suitable)... it would be a shame to have to cancel... anything I should check for myself (loose ground points, etc.)?

Cheers,

- HJ

First I have heard of it, and I've heard just about every issue with them.

Sorry I can't be any more help, I hope its something minor like a chaffed wire that can be repaired easily.

HJ,

I had one fuse blow on my Uly. I was on the highway running pretty briskly and stopped to fix something with my jacket for a few minutes and then restarted on my way. Fuse popped about 2 miles down the road. I think it was HOT more than shorted. It has never blown again. I think it was a 10 amp fuse but it has been over a year so memory is cloudy. New bikes do run a little hotter so ...

There have been shorts and trouble lights related to the fuel pump on older models but I don't think associated with fuses.

Maybe some others will offer a comment.

Well with the older models, the wires on the fuel pump can chafe causing the pump to not work, but that was resolved several years back.

I have had three fuel pump fuses blow on my '08 xb12x and the dealer could not find the cause. I sanded the frame ground points and keep 5 spare fuses under the seat. Let me know if you find the cause.

Where are the frame ground points? I see one coming right off the battery which appears well connected although I'll work on it a bit when I get home. I assume there's others I should check? There are some very bad places on my commute where losing power would be *dangerous* and I'd like to fix the problem. I fear if I visit the dealer they will take the bike from me for a week only to tell me they can't find the issue...

I did the two that are near each end of the fuse box. Somebody else here recommended it to me. I'm sure you can find more on it using the search link.
My dealer had my bike for week and told me they couldn't find it. I haven't had any problems in about 6 months.

Well, took it to the local dealer. They checked it out and are replacing the fuel pump. Talking to the tech on the phone, I'm not sure actually found any issues. It was more along the lines of "we looked for a ground in the fuse box, the wiring was good, so it has to be the fuel pump..."

Anyways we'll see if that solves the issue.

Seems like there are a few other riders with the fuse pump blowing issue... would be interesting to see if they were built around similar times. My build was in Oct '08...

Cheers,

HJ
