I have a loud knocking noise coming from my xb12s and I wanted to open up the primary to see if it could be something in here before I resort to it being a bottom end problem or something.
So I just took off the primary case to look for anything loose and I dont know what to be looking for in here. Do I need to take it more apart?
The 3/8 - 1/2 inch tightness of the primary chain altogether should be based off of how much play there is in the inspection cover right? because there is a ton now but I guess thats expected. Otherwise I think its fine.
The little bar that sticks out that connects to the shift lever has some wiggle but I doubt thats the problem since its held by the cover when its on.
Other bolts seem tight.
Anyone know what could cause a noise? Anyone know anything else that could cause a nasty knocking noise? Is a bottom end rebuild at harley expensive? ha
Heres how far I have it opened up now. Thanks guys.

Is the stator nut loose? Or the splines damaged? That'll give you a knock... with a bit of a ring... that will go away when you lightly drag the clutch.

so could loose mean "tight but not tight enough" in the case of that large nut who has a ton of weight behind it? or is it if its not wiggling, its ok?

How much free play was there in the primary chain before you removed the cover?

It's the nut towards the front of the bike, which is actually the crank. But if the clutch nut is loose, it could do the same thing.

When my crank nut was loose on the M2, it had visible play when I pulled the cover. And the torque spec has been updated since the manuals were published (2007 maybe?), so even if you do everything per the book you can end up with a loose nut on there. That's why I suggested checking it. That, and because as "knocking noises go", a loose crank nut that you find before the splines get eaten is about the best news you could hope for...

Can you elaborate on the noise you hear, and when you hear it? Mine is making a noise too. It seemed to happen after I changed the primary fluid. I sounds like marbles banging around in the primary. I only hear it when I am coasting to a stop. Clutch engaged or not. It makes no difference. It doesn't do it when it's under a load.
