2007 XB12S

I have taken the bike to the shop, they checked the charging system, and put some type of computer on it and dove her around to try and duplicate the problem. In the end, they charged me $275 to tell me that the middle bulb was loose and it was letting air in and blowing the bulbs because they are super sensative. Well I took her home and within a few days blew a light. I called and they told me it could be from something else and not related to the same problem.. Gave me a bunch of dance and bull instead of committing to it being something they need to fix and not charge me for.

Anyway, I replaced the light and everything was fine for a few weeks. Tonight I took her out for a spin and within minutes both the low and high beam blew. There was a quick flash before the low blew, then I switched it to the High and it just blew instantly.

I will not go back to my Local dealership here in Melbourne, I will never set foot in that shop ever again. Not even if they would work on my bike for free. So I have turned to you for help. Im leaning to the regulator, but would like to hear from those here before I start throwing good money after bad..

Also, my neutral light will not work when the bike is hot. They supposedly fixed this as well. It works when cold, but will not light up after the bike has been running.. this is not really a huge issue, I dont need a light to tell or help me find neutral..

Sounds like a voltage regulator issue.

Scratch that, tech did not let me replace it, says it tests fine. He spent 3 hours going over my bike and could not find the reason. Asked me to bring it back and leave it so he and the head Buell guy could go over it.

Sub ground needed to be removed, sanded and replaced. Tech called the factory and was told it's an issue on the ullys. Maybe they should issue a memo to all service departments!!!

Anyway issue seems solved for now.

There was a tech service bulletin released a while back for that. Here is the text from it:

TT399 – December 17, 2008 - Buell Ulysses Ground Repair 2006 – 2009
2006 – 2009 Buell Ulysses Ground Repair
Poor ground connections have been found at the tail section ground locations.
Below are some of the symptoms that you might see, and a procedure to repair
this condition. While the specifically affected models are 2006 to 2009 XB12X,
this Tech Tip could serve as a reference for improving ground circuits on any
model.
In the figure below, you can see where the negative battery cable is attached to
the tail section of the vehicle. This ground location is essential to virtually all of
the motorcycle’s electrical systems. A poor contact here can cause poor running
issue and no crank conditions. The instrument cluster may even stay on after the
key is turned to the OFF position. These issues can also be intermittent.
XB Tail Section Ground Location
To clean the ground area, you must remove the fastener that secures the ground
terminals to the tail section and clean all surfaces. This includes the fastener, tail
section boss, ring terminals, and battery tray. (See images below)

Ground Fastener to Be Removed
Once the faster is removed, lightly sand both the threads and the face of the
screw. (See image below)
Lightly sand both sides of the ring terminals to clean any impurities from the
surfaces. (See images below)
Ring Terminals to Be Cleaned

Lastly, clean the ground boss and the battery tray surfaces by sanding to remove
Any paint or other impurities.

Tail Section Ground Boss and Battery Pan
After all of these surfaces have been cleaned, apply dielectric grease to the
Fastener and reinstall to 72-108 in/lbs. (97.6 – 146.4 Nm).

son of a bitch.. maybe its just rare that it happened to my xb12s... either way, it was a very anoying 2 to 3 months..

and the anoyance continues.. went for a ride on Thanksgiving and blew the low beam within 12 miles.. I give up..

they put a new voltage regulator in it.. the factory said the old style had a problem, and the new ones had the clips already on them.. so why is that a problem that I needed to pay for, and not a recall issue?? if it blows another headlight, Im gonna do something assenine

If the bike is under warranty, that would of taken care of it. If not, payment is between you and the dealer. It is not a recall issue. Brake lines that rub against the tire, or windshields that come loose? Yes, but not a faulty regulator.

If it blows another headlight, you shouldn't pay a dime to fix it, as it would be an issue with the dealers workmanship.

it was not a faulty regulator Froggy, it was a defect in the way they had the regulator attatched to the harness. The new regulators now come with the clip installed on the line from the regulator.

the regulator tested fine, its why when I asked them to replace it the frist time they resisted because it was working fine.
