My speedo is being a bit of a bugger. Running and reading fine when the engine is cold, but, as soon as he warms up it goes erratic for about 5 miles then stops working altogether. Leave him to cool down and it works fine again. Have checked connection and when you wiggle it sometimes you can get it back to working erratically again. Arggghhhhhhhhh!!!!! Help please!!! |

I think you have answered your own question. You have a bad connection somewhere or chaffed wire. Take your time and start working back from the speedo. |

What connection are you talking about? The speedo has various connectors all the way up to the ECM. |

Its the speedometer sensor connection that seems to encourage some life out of the clock when you give it a wiggle. Have checked the wire (which is fine) have robbed the sensor off the lightning but couldn't manage to get out for a full warm up test ride due to weather. Hoping to get out tomorrow will be checking that and let you know how its going. |

There's one thing regarding the sensor itself. Some have posted that metallic debris can sometimes stick itself on the tip of the sensor inside the gearbox resulting in a temporary malfunction of the speedo. I doubt if that might be your problem seeing that you can affect the symptom by wiggling the wire but it's worth mentioning.
But, you know, if you can make it work by wiggling the wire, that tells me that the problem is in the wiring. So, as long as you have the problem sensor out of the bike, take an ohmmeter and connect it to the sensor leads and then wiggle its wires. If you can get it to show a discontinuity by wiggling the sensor wires or a portion of a wire, then the sensor is defective.
I like your thinking by substituting a different known good sensor. Good technique, hope it narrows the problem for you. |

OK. So with substitute sensors we rode both bikes out this morning. All is well both speedo's are working and reading ok. Warmed them both to full temp then let them cool and back up to temp again no problems. Am assuming it must have been some form of debris on the sensor and when they have been swapped and cleaned it must have got rid of whatever it was. Will keep an eye on it and et you know if it starts playing up again
