i have a 96 S1 now, but its had alot of work done by the PO so im not sure if the sprockets are stock...

but what would be the most optimal for high mpg's?

You can use European gearing, 29 front 55 rear. That way you use the same belt. Cheak out "What gear ya in?"

My S1 began with euro gearing, then was id atlantic & now is full US - I didn't notice any difference in fuel use.

It still cruises at sensible RPM - Euro spec was about 400rpm lower - but you get into top sooner with US gearing. No major difference IMO.

US gearing is more fun - I'd keep it on a S1 - S1 is not a cruiser
