I have a '03 XB9R Firebolt. I was riding on my favorite twisty road (a bit bumpy but fun) and after and hour riding I pulled over to stretch my legs and turned off the engine. When I wanted to start up the bike, I turned the key, the needles did their check and the oil light came on and stayed on, when I pushed the starter button nothing happened. After f**** around for an hour I pushed my bike to this mechanic's place, with the girlfriend not saying anything just making angry faces.

I pushed my bike to a mechanic where I put some more engine oil in the swingarm, thinking that it's the oil level that is preventing my bike to turn on since after checking the oil it was at the low level but still acceptable. After doing that nothing happened, the oil light stayed on. We tried to jump start the bike but it didn't turn over and my battery is in good condition, the high beams turned on and was bright. We tried to push it in but but it seemed like the spark plugs are not working. Then we checked all the fuses and relay boxes and the wires but everything was fine. What the old car mechanic ended up doing after 2 hours of frustration is that he hot wired my bike, he put a small wire from the "Key Switch" fuse over to the "Ignition" fuse in the fuse box. He said that my ignition wire is broken somewhere, because the fuse is working fine but there is no current through it when the key is turned on. After the bike was hot wired, the bike worked perfectly. When I came home I had to take the wire out, since the light stayed on due to the hot wiring after the engine was turned off.

When I turned on the key, I was checking every visible wire hoping for the fuel pump to make a noise when I would finally find the bad wire, but I was unlucky. Can anyone tell me where the problem might be and with what? If I can't fix it, I will hot wire the bike again and take it to the Buell dealership for repairs.

It might be the Ignition Relay is bad.

There are 3 relays in the relay center: Key Switch, Ignition and Start.

I'd remove the Ignition Relay, take it to an auto parts store and find a match. Then get 2 of them. First put in a new Ignition Relay. If that doesn't fix the problem, replace the Key Switch Relay with a new one and try starting again.

I went to an auto parts store but they only sell car relays, they only had square ones and not rectangular ones like the Buell's. So I went to the Buell dealer and bought two relays. I did exactly what you said, and it turned out that my "Key Switch Relay" burned out. I replaced the relay and the bike works fine now. I put the spare relay in the spare side in the relay box for future. The two relays were $17 Canadian.
