So, a summer or so ago (approx 20,000 miles) , my 03 9r (Race ecm, K&N, Spec Ops)starts intermittently "bogging down" when accelerating from the 3000 ish rpm range. It would typically eventually pull itself out of the bog, but I say "wtf?".

I kinda just keep riding it, continuing to do the scheduled maintenance (oil, plugs, air filter cleanings, tps resets etc...).

Lately, it's doin' it all the time, and even occassionally stalling while just cruising along, and cutting right out while accelerating gently through suburban cornering---this is getting annoying now!! It would run fine in the upper rpm's, but like #%*$ at anything below 4000-4500 rpm.

I say "wtf"? Absolutely no error codes come up. New plugs, inspected and cleaned the plug ends of the spark plug wires, reset the tps, nothing helped.

My buddy who was helping me sort this out suggested that I pick up a oxygen sensor prior to my next visit to his house. Figured that whatever the problem is, it's connected to the bike running in "closed" mode (ie the mode that the ecm runs in at less than a certain rpm at certain speeds...open, or closed....I get them mixed up.)

Anyway, with a four day road trip into NY/VT/NH coming up this weekend, I kinda sorta needed to try a new O2 sensor like, now, but unfortunately my local dealer had no stock.

Enter BadWeb: search of the knowledge vault on 03 xb9r oxygen sensor brought up a thread that provided a list of equivalent sensors from other suppliers. Quick call to a local auto parts store, they've got the equivalent part from Bosch. I pick it up, we install it, and presto. I am pleasantly reminded of all that low end power that I had kinda forgotten was ever there. Bike now scrambles like a scolded cat from as low as 2000 rpm.

Thanks BadWeb and all the great people here.

So how much was the sensor and was it worth it? I had to chuckle at the post. Glad it runs fine now.

Thanks for the report Rob. That's good information for the rest of us.

I hope you don't mind that I changed your thread title. I think it might help better communicate your intent.

Thanks again,

Blake

Hey Blake, thanks for modifying the title...it does communicate the intent better.

Bert - the Bosch oxygen sensor was $41 CDN. Replacing it involved removing the shock and cooling fan. Was it worth it....? read on...

BUT!!!!...on the way in to meet the weekend ride group on Friday morning, AGGHHHH...it starts running like you know what again. The problem is still there.

So, I double back home, grab the original ECM, hook back up with the group, and swap the stock ECM back in later Friday afternoon. It runs better on Saturday, but starts acting up again on Sunday.

I don't know...there's still something not quite right...

I'll keep this thread updated as we try to sort it out.

Intermittent, electrical, whoa is you. Hang tough. When you finally find the culprit, you'll feel like you've won a glorious victory.

Update:
the odo turned 50,000 kms on the weekend!!

But, it's still running like crap.

Upon paying more attention to what it's doing, it (regardless of engine temp):
-almost stalls on launch (need to double clutch and rev a little higher to avoid stalling);
-when rolling off, ever so gently, to just maintain throttle (at all revs, although I guess it's more noticable at lower revs), it lurches and I detect a sputtering, and almost a "resonating" sound from the engine, then has an abnormally long/delayed throttle response and "bogging" when you get back on the throttle;
-throws the engine light on when crawling around for a couple minutes at "suburbs" speeds and revs.

So far I've pulled the race ECM and put the original ecm back in, reset the TPS, adjusted the idle, cleaned the (fairly new) spark plugs, cleaned the air filter, cleaned up the plug wire connectors, cleaned the battery cable connectors, put a new O2 sensor in, ran some fuel injector cleaner through the bike, changed engine and tranny oils, checked again for fault codes with the stock ecm (nothing).

Next steps are new plug wires and an Intake Air Sensor....

I have M2's but have you thought of the head temp sensor (if you have one)

Visual inspection is not a reliable method for checking the plug wires. You need to check the resistance as well. They are cheap enough to just toss and get a new pair.

head temp sensor....maybe...but the symptoms are present at both cold and warm engine temps...so....?

New plug wires will be installed this weekend...but meanwhile I was poking around in the little rat's nest of wiring/connectors in front of the front sprocket. Found two wires where there was some chaffing...one on the (I think) speed sensor circuit (gray three pin Deutsch connector) and the other on the (again, I think) the voltage regulator (black two pin Packard connector) circuit. Applied some electrical tape....
Also pulled apart three of the four (couldn't for the life of me get the fourth one out and clear enough to get it apart, and I'm always super paranoid about breaking something!!) multipin connectors under there--they seemed clean and "rust" free inside, sprayed some contact cleaner on them...
Rode in to work this morning....it seemed better....holding my breath....could this be...?

I have the same issue and have for some time now. Basically the same story you have. Its been a whole year and I've just lived with it, but honestly I'm beginning to get fed up. Only real difference is that mine does it more hot.

ya....I'm starting to get real frustrated with it too.

starting new thread as the title of this one now limits traffic....

Sounds like your head temp sensor has shifted.

Put in a new one and place some of that heat shield/cable cover tube that is used on ignition wires over the cable all the way over the end of the sensor after it is installed.

These sensors do suffer from heat soak and will wander after a time.

I believe that AL at American Sport Bike has both the sensor and the tool to do the job.

head temp sensor.....hmmm...maybe...I was kinda thinking that because the symptoms are present at both cool and hot engine temps, that maybe it wasn't the head temp sensor....but, maybe it is..... I'll look into that further...

thanks.

see....the thing is, is that no error codes are popping up.....

just put in a new coil.....

problem still there....

ahhh...finally....an error (a "functional" error...) Cam position sensor....hmmm...

Don't know if it's what you need, but one of those 3 prong plugs that you mentioned in an earlier post goes to the cam pos. sensor.

yup....part of the diagnostic flow chart calls for checking all that wiring for shorts, prior to indicating that the sensor itself might be suspect. New sensor on order....and it comes (as fas as I know) with one end of that connector..
thanks for the post!

The sensor will only throw a code if it loses continuity.

I have used the thermal tubing to cover the exposed part of the sensor and cable and seems to last a lot longer.
