Have you purchased these yet? I going to use 'Seahorse' bags...see their site. Pelican bags are good too. Both can be made to work with the stock brackets. Check out the prices at their websites.

By the way . . . one of the big advantages of the Buell over the Pelican is the weight of the bags.

The Pelicans are great, I have a set of custom made Pelican cases to transport radio equipment and repeaters when we were racing at Bonneville and for my guitar equipment. But the downside is that the EMPTY Pelican case at the airport is almost overweight so as much as I love it (and my wife gripes about the International Orange) if I carry more than a t-shirt I pay the $50.00 fee.

Be mindful, as you look at bags for a motorcycle of the effect it had on not just weight, but weight and balance. Look at the photo above and you can see that there is significant moment involved with the rear case. Weight is critically important to handling and safety. I've seen lots of neat set ups but none better than the Buell which was designed to be used on . . . . well, the Buell.

If I were in the market for some hard cases, those would be the ones I'd purchase. No painted finish to worry about, the textured black finish compliments the bike nicely.

You sure aren't downplaying the top case handling effect. Save the trunk for the lightweight stuff only. Put the dense paraphernalia at the bottom of the side cases or worst case inside a Ventura or other soft pack resting on the rear seat.

That last photo is spectacular. Looks like something that Buell Marketing would pay for.

I ordered and was required to pay for up front the top and side cases on July 21 for a trip this weekend Aug 27.

Long story the parts manager called me yesterday to say they were in.

I drove the 1.5 hours to my nearest Buell dealer to pick up the order and they only had one box, containing the top case. No racks no side cases. A wasted 3 hours, plus gas, not to mention that they have had my money for over a month and I won't have the top and side case for my trip.

No apology, just pass the buck to the warehouse. Would you not think that a reasonable person would realize that the entire order would not fit in one box?

>>>Would you not think that a reasonable person would realize that the entire order would not fit in one box?

The TECHNICAL response to that question . . of course . . . is "DUH???"

See if this helps.

If you have ANY problem let me know . . I can solve this in 3 minutes and 18 seconds. The bright side of this is that it seems like only yesterday folks were complaining that Buell would ONLY sell the complete kit . . .

Suggest you ask them; since they are responsible for your wasted trip, time, money; to ship the merchandise to you free of charge.

If not, cancel the order and place it with one of our sponsors who ship to you direct.

Buell really ought to consider a drop ship system whereby the dealer still sells, but never need touch the order that is sent directly to the customer.

Buell parts via Amazon.com?

>>>Buell really ought to consider a drop ship system whereby the dealer still sells, but never need touch the order that is sent directly to the customer.

That's an accurate statement.

The ONLY impediment to that is Luddite "we've never done that" at Harley-Davidson.

Times have changed.

Several months ago my cousin (who Blake has met and is familiar with) helped a fellow who was in a bind and needed to borrow some money. Repayment difficulties resulted in Jack owning the guys business.

We took it online and are now the largest distributor of Harley-Davidson footwear. We picked up many other brands and are currently selling about $175,000/week at a handsome margin.

I confess I was absolutely floored.

I recently ordered a $0.12 part (the 10 mm nut that secures the XB12X taillight) and kinda laughed when the parts guy called to tell me I could come pick it up. It wasn't his fault but the lunacy of paying the fuel, $5.50 bridge toll and time to drive and get it was evident to me. I was there anyway getting the Rider Comfort Kit and collected it but . . .

I **SHOULD** be able to:

  • Sign up for BUELL GOLD SERVICE
  • Pay my annual fee - the first year includes the paper Service Manual and Parts Manual for my bike
  • I get BFD (Buell Fast Delivery) service
  • I go to an online manual
  • Thumb through with a mouse
  • Click in the part to put it in my shopping cart
  • It delivers to me
  • Dealer, based on either zip code of "prior dealing authorized override" gets his vig
  • Parts come to either me or dealer, per what I checked
  • When I place the order a window pops up to advise me or any TSB (Technical Service Bulletin), Product Recall, Product Improvement Program or General Information since my last visit.
  • If there is an open recall, that part is shipped to the dealer and an e-mail sent advising dealer of ETA and to contact the customer to arrange install appointment

Guess what world , , , in 1997 when Buell was on the verge (the year they did the Service Manual on CD) of having this and was slapped down like a puppy that peed on the HD rug . . it was light years ahead of it's time (along with the Buell Build Your Own which the car makers would catch on to about 6 years after Buell had tried to do it) but today . . . IT'S SIMPLE.

The hurdle: Corporate Culture.

I love construction.

P.S. - if I were doing it . . . you are right, I'd outsource it through a 3rd party fulfillment provider. We NEVER see the 900 pairs of Justin boots we see a week,

just an update, the dealer received the rest of the order this morning, I rode down there this afternoon and they installed the top and side cases. Normally I would install them myself, but I needed them in time for my trip tomorrow.

They charged me 2 hours for labour and then gave me a $50 credit for my troubles.

Another 7 hours of my time but on a good note the bags look great and I have them.

Heres a few pics of the installed cases

They have a nice texture

The idiot that installed them forgot a few things

I had to ride all the way to Sudbury on a loose seat. Once there I noticed that another frame bolt was missing as well.
Thats what I get for not doing it myself

I'm interested in using these on a 2009 Lightning Long. Since the frame is the same size as the Uly's it seems like they should work, but the devil is always in the details. What issues am I likely to run into?

The issue of no brackets that are commercially available that will work on your bike : )

You are going to need to buy brackets for a standard lightning, and then custom fabricate the mounts so it will fit on your bike.

What prevents the Ulysses brackets from working on a Lightning Long?

You got nowhere to bolt them. The 6 mounting points are on Ulysses specific parts, 4 on the tail section center piece, and the last 2 on the footpeg mounts.

Kinda hard to see, but here is a picture of (aftermarket) racks on the bike

Again, your best bet is to get the standard lightning racks and get them modified to fit your bike.

Thanks guys. That's exactly what I was wanting to know. Modifying Lightning racks is doubtless the simplest/cheapest solution. Would this leave the passenger pegs usable?

Nope, as the brackets use the footpeg mount holes.

OK. So how much work was it to add the Uly tail and peg brackets to you XB12Ss? Do you feel like it was worth the expense and bother?

Thanks Frank. Certainly some work, but it may be good a winter project. I'll give it some thought while I work on the first project, ride the heck out of the Lightning until the weather gets too crappy for two wheels.
