Normal bicycle shorts (the dreaded spandex) work great under armored breathable pants are comfortable for all day use and offer a lot of protection. That's what I wear when I am touring... |

If you are worried about protection in a crash, get some armored pants. Shorts won't cut it under jeans. |

"Normal bicycle shorts...offer a lot of protection." I can't see how they could... Like the other fellow alluded to, they may offer protection against "stains" seeping through the underpants!! |

I didn't mean to imply that normal bicycle shorts alone will protect from anything... The intent was to communicate that normal bicycle shorts *with* quality armored ventilated riding pants (I have first gear pants and like them) offer good protection with great comfort for touring. Sorry for any confusion... |

"If you are worried about protection in a crash"......I think everyone should be worried about that, that's why you should dress properly for the occasion...thanks for the information I'm looking at draggin jeans. (Message edited by blue_pipe on August 07, 2009) |

Don't rule out armored riding pants. I just buy them on the big side, and pull them over pants. That way, when you get there, you can just pop off your boots and pull them off if you want. They aren't much more expensive then draggin jeans, and (IMHO, flame away) offer a lot more protection. |

Bohn body armor has several types of protective under garments, as well as T-Pro Forcefield. Both websites have very good info on the options available. |

My below-the-belt input: Long, cycling shorts style underwear is great for comfort on a longer ride. For protection, some combo of abrasion and impact protection gives the best protection. Options: Bohn leg armor under leather pants, or regular jeans with armored overpants as Reepicheep suggested, so you can remove the stuff fairly easily if you are going somewhere where you don't want to stay in riding gear off the bike. I don't mind the Bohn leg gear under my jeans for a shorter amount of time off the bike, but I would hate to stay with them on in the heat, or for a longer time. That's why the overpants always seem to end up being the most practical. Draggin' jeans sound great for abrasion protection with the kevlar, however I like the idea of having impact protection as well, for more protection from bone breakage and internal injury. |

I wear the Knox leg armor under jeans, its not so bad if you put on some soccer socks under them. it puts a barrier between your legs and the armor, and lets your skin breathe and the moisture wick |
