They say you can never be too good looking or too rich. I would not know much about either, but what about jetting? I have a 2000 M2 that did fine for several years with a 45 pilot jet. I started having some rough running last year after moving to San Diego, so I went to a 48. It helped, but I still have rough running in the 3100-3700 range. I solved a high speed miss fire by shimming the needle, but the roughness persisted. I now have a bit of pinging at high throttle settings.

Do I dare go still richer? I am not even sure there is a jet bigger than a 48.

Have you sprayed any WD-40 around the intake manifold gaskets at the head and carb while it's running to see if it changes the engine speed which would confirm an intake air leak?

From all of the posts that I've read and people I've corresponded with I haven't heard anyone go larger than a 48, plus I think that the RPM range is more affected by the needle.

Pinging at high throttle too! I tend to think that if things were once fine and now a problem developed that it's something else especially since it's affecting all three areas - idle, mid, and high it makes me think there's too much air extra air getting in around the seals.
I think I'd check that since it's really easy to do first.
