i have owned this x1 for a little over a year without a problem, the other day on my way home from work, it began misfiring, at the same time the tach, speedo, and odo were powering off and on. it got worse and worse, eventually stalling out for 1/2 second at a time. i looked at the wiring all around and saw no copper, grounds are good because lights were still working, i'm thinking voltage regulator because after i got home, battery was too dead to turn it over. upon charging batt. it cranked but wouldn't start. it is equipped with race ecm and k&n power commander II (lost mapping with dead battery?) and k&n filtercharger. i have no idea where to start, but i am mechanically/technically inclined. help!?!?

If it has a sidestand switch, that might be the problem. The ignition power goes through that switch when the sidestand is up. It is a common failure point.

But with your other symptoms, I'd say that's not it and I'd go with troubleshooting the charging system.

For starters get a service manual. It's around $60 at the dealer or half that on Ebay. Everything you need to know is in there.

But if you are chompin' at the bit to get started, there is a pdf SM for an S1 on this site until you get your hands on the right one. The chapter on charging systems is virtually the same for both models, I believe.

Pleaehelpme-

I had some crazy symptoms that were hard to figure out. I was looking for obvious bad connections, grounds, shorts and all. Noting was obvious. It took an OHM meter and doing diagnostic checks per the manual to find the problem. The problem turned out to be something that was really unimaginable. A wire basically pulled out of a crimped on connector that was inside a plastic connector to a fuel injector. It was something that I have never seen before. There is no conceivable reason why this wire broke off from the metal clip that is inside this connector.
Judging by the symptoms you describe of intermittant off and on actions of your gauges and sudden misfiring and all - I'd say to get a manual and do some tests with the OHM meter. The manual describes the "wiggle test". By doing that type of test I finally tracked down that intermitant problem I had. You see- whatever is happening with your bike it could be that a wire is loose or broken and it is making and breaking contact simply from the vibrations and movements while you are riding.
As for the thought about the voltage reg. being bad- That would be a good place to check first. My voltage reg shot craps when I was riding one day a while ago and the bike eventually died because of draining the battery. No worry about the ECM retaining codes because of no power. Check all your wiring connections after verifying the voltage regulator is good or not. I hope this helps. Keep us informed on your progress.
