Hey, I got a solid warning light...no blinking. Hooked up ecm spy and it gives this code. I looked in the manual and it says I have to remove the rear shock to get to the fan. I dont have torque wrenches..or the jack here to lift the bike for that. Anyone else have this trouble... i had the bike apart yesterday for the plugs so it could be a pinched wire...but if anyone else has solved this without dissasembly I would love the insite | ||

Never mind....It was a fuse...which i had checked. but didnt look at close enough.. sorry to bother | ||

spoke too soon.. Its blowing fuses....Any sugestions before ordering a fan? | ||

Before ordering a part that might not be the root cause of the problem, I'd suggest checking out the wires related to the fan. Look closely at each wire where the wire harness gets close to an engine part or frame. All it takes is a slight break in the wire insulation to short out the circuit long enough to blow a fuse. | ||

Disconnect the fan and see if it still blows? Common failure points are under the seat where the ecm harness passes the battery terminal (it should go under the terminal, not over it) and at the steering head where it comes out from under the frame. | ||

Check what Sparky and Reep stated. If no luck with that, pull the fan. I had this issue about 6 months ago. My fan crapped out. Find a place where you can suspend the bike from a ceiling/roof structure. I did it in my shed. You need to get the back wheel off the ground just enough to allow the swingarm to drop just a bit once you pull the spring off. Be careful you don't put too much stress on the rear brake line. You can just place the entire shock assembly off to the side enough to work. It's a pain in the ass but easy enough to do on your own. | ||

Thanks for the help. I have a friend coming over with a floor jack tomorrow. Dont have the ability to hang the bike...You said you pull the spring off..Do you just mean the shock tower? I have the service manual so hopefully it will be fairly straight forward. That would be great. I do have a fan coming from AL incase it is thet fan. Worst case is i end up with a new fan installed and a spare thats good. I will definetly check the places you mentioned....Thanks again Any of you guys near Charlotte NC and want to ride and tinker let me know... | ||

Yeah, not the actual spring, just that whole assembly. You will need to find a way to stabilize the bike once it's on the jack. I was uncomfortable with the play in the bike, that's why I suspended it. | ||

Went out and checked all the wiring... Couldnt find anything wrong..The fan area was greassy so i srayed it down and cleaned it up real good. Ran it until it should be plenty hot. No fan but no fuse blowing. On and off several times same. No fan ever. Put it all back together (seat and cowl) start it up. No fan. Solid light. fuse blown. I guess i gotta replace the dang thing. Any tips on getting my fat little fingers on that connector . Hopefully i still got a roach clip left around from the 60's...lol | ||

I got a few of those laying around collecting dust some where. The connector was the biggest pia for me. I finally got it with a pair of long needle nose. Good luck bud... (Message edited by Firebolt32 on July 27, 2009) | ||

Well I got it apart...Not too bad. Bought a jack a and used tiedowns to support it from under the hitch on my fifth wheel. Pretty stable that way. That was what worried me the most was it falling off the jack. THe boards cut to the shape of the muffler helped too.. Found a little probe with a hook on it does the trick on that damn connector. Couldn't someone tell them to put another half inch of wire on the fan to the plug..Really... Waiting on the fan to get her back together...come on UPS.. By the way....found that the fuses with the led in them to show when they blow will keep the light on the dash from coming on when they blow. Some resistance left or something.. Thought they would be a good idea. Got them at northern tools when i was blowing fuses..ANyway, I won't use them now for that reason. | ||

I stopped using those fuses for that reason as well. Takes more time getting to the fan than replacing it. Sucks...but better than giving a tech $85+ an hour. | ||

GOt it back together....Thanks al for the fast shippin. Only lost one bolt in the process....Damn gravel. Left out the fan bolt under the harness. Looked tight enough with the other three and didnt like the idea of that bolt rubbing the harness either. Anyway, thanks for the helpful ideas ...back to riding......soon as it stops raining |
