I'm led to believe the oil additive ZDDP (Google it, you'll be interested in the results) has been removed from the new tech oils because it had adverse reactions to catalytic converters. I am also led to believe flat tappet motors like our V-Twins need this additive to protect the valve train, hence Buell recommending using a diesel oil (which presumably has ZDDP) as an alternative to the Harley 20w50 oil.

I am very keen to hear from anyone who has any knowledge about this additive and what other engine oils may still have such an additive in their oil?

H-D air cooled V-Twins since 1929 have roller tappets/lifters.

I've run Shell Rotella T in just about every vehicle I've had since the mid '70s.

ZDDP has been lowered in car application because the govt is concerned the zinc affecting catalytic converters and other emission controls.

Diesel oils need higher amounts of ZDDP because the engines run at higher pressures (on the bearings)

You should be safe running a diesel rated oil in your bike. I would not run a car rated oil in your bike.
