Not sure what's going on...

My 06 XB9SX has been cutting out once in a while recently. It's happened doing 70mph or so during my commute and also slower at 35mph.

I'm going to have to dig into it. Grounds, plugs, plug wires, wiring, no idea yet.

I've got a Drummer and race ECM and Hillbilly intake and breather reroute. That's it as far as engine mods. Hope it doesn't crap out completely on the way home.

It's been dry and in the 70's, bike has been warmed up plenty good. I'm not thrashing on it 30 seconds after start up or anything.

Input welcomed.

Start with the battery terminals and the under the seat ECM wire bundle routing.

What's a Hillbilly intake?

Found vibration worn wire jacket atop rear cylinder head for cylinder head temp sensor recently on my 04 XB12 @ 7,500 m.
Slit length of small piece of vinyl tubing. It's around wire there as extra jacket/protection now.

Thanks Reepicheep & Aptbldr, when I got to work I snooped around a bit and was able to tighten the battery cables just a little bit.

I'll have to wait til I get home to do too much. I'll check out the wiring for sure. I'll post when I get it figured out.

Aptbldr, the Hillbilly Motors FAST intake is what I was referring to. It's basically a K&N cone filter on a velocity stack and has a heat barrier between the engine and filter.

Might be worth pulling, cleaning, then re-tightining when you get back to the garage... once air gets in there for a while it oxidizes and isn't quite as good as it could be. Just a simple brass brushing or baking soda and a toothbrush or something, nothing dramatic.

It's easy to route that ECM bundle over a battery terminal as well, it will put a micro nick in some random wire, and make some sensor intermittently read off scale, causing who knows what...

So I've taken a few stabs at this as time permits.

In looking I found a bare spot on the rear plug wire. I replaced those and the plugs while I was at it. I'm glad I caught it, but it didn't fix the trouble.

I've cleaned up the battery connections really well with a brush and am going through the wiring looking for issues.

I see a bare wire spot at a grey, triangular, 3 wire ( red, white, black ) Deutschbag connector under front "sprocket" cover. What's that connector for? I'm curious. My manual is later than 06 and evidently this is different on 08's. Stupid, I need an 06 manual, I know.

It won't hurt to fix it, but I'd like to know what the hell it is. Speedometer sensor wires, shrug. Could that cause me some grief like cutting out?

"Deutschbag" connector. Love it. It helps to have a sense of humor in these situations.

A triangular, 3 wire connector is most likely for the Cam Position Sensor, definitely could be related to your problem.

But my manual for an '03 XB9R shows the wires as R/W, GN/W, BK/W. Can you verify those colors?

A red, a white, a black. I fixed the worn red and took the bike out and it still stumbled pretty bad a few times.

Went to Destination cause I dropped my damn helmet and broke it. They had some on sale but wouldn't sell me the ones on sale. Then some put a coke bottle behind my tire and I almost tripped while backing my bike up. That's probably good for today.

Time to back slowly away from the garage and go drink.

I just need to back way

Hey Sticks-
Check your fuel injector wires for broken or nearly broken connections at the connectors in particular.
There's a test you can do with an OHM meter from the ECM to the connector wires that involves the"wiggle test" If you have a manual, you should find the process there.
That was the problem that I had with driveability on my Buell- broken F.I. wire on the front cylinder.

Turned out to be the timing sensor. The coil and O2 sensor and plugs and wires were also replaced and TPS done. All better.

being nosy...jumping in here.....my 9r is kinda acting like that too....and I've replaced plugs, plug wires, coil, o2 sensor, tested for manifold leaks, fairly new battery, cleaned battery connectors, threw the stock ecm back in, no error codes being thrown from either the race or stock...

I'm currently scouring BadWeb for head temp sensor info, and came across your thread.

"timimg sensor"? you mean the cam position sensor? or something else?

thanks...
Rod

My invoice says " timing sensor " When I look up the part # 32443-04 it says " sensor, timing assy ". Not my nomenclature, shrug, hope that helps.

The dealer and or I went through much the same run down as you before they figured it out. Good luck with yours.
