The engine will crank over,there is spark, and it is getting fuel. It appears to be a choke problem. If you pour raw fuel in the intake, it will start, and if you get the engine warm it will run. Help!

Linda...here is a set of questions.

(a) If you get the engine warmed up and shut it off will it crank back up again
without pouring more raw fuel in?
(b) Once the engine is running, does it
idle normally?
(c) Does the engine pop or backfire?

The problem may be a damaged manifold coupler...it is a rubber "boot" that connected the carb to the intake manifold.

A test for that is to get the engine idling and spray some brake cleaner all around the boot...if the idle smooths out it has a rip in it and is leaking vacuum.

Remove the air filter assembly and the carb..remove the couple and check it for rips and tears...there is also a large rubber cap that goes on the carb (49 state spec bikes) or a
vacuum line that goes to the vapor recovery
canister (california spec bike) that could be leaking vacuum...

Don't be to discouraged Linda. The blast is a pretty straight forward bike to work on and fix and usually pretty reliable. I have a 2001 as well and love it. You have come to the right place to diagnose your problem. Do you have any other mod's besides the seat?

Welcome to the Badweb!
The Blast is a really sensitive cold starter. In stock running gear it runs very lean and when it is cold it needs a much richer fuel mixture to start and run/idle. So if you have an older Blast with a slightly clogged carburetor slow speed fuel jet and idle circuit it will compound you starting problems.
That being said, if it was running fine and then suddenly stopped starting for you without adding extra fuel I would check the intake boot, or the rubber coupling between the carburetor and the engine. Make sure it is tight and there are no cracks present in the rubber.

The manifold couplers fail often and are cheap. Replace it and see if the problem goes away. It is the rubber piece in this picture:

If It is DAS BOOT, I would suggest picking up one of Dan's Super Boots. Basically its a reinforced boot. I've been running mine for a few months now, and it's been running great! I'd also suggest a rejet if you have time. I went up one notch on the primary and slow jets, and the Blast has never run better.
