I have a '03 XB9R, and sometimes when I'm riding along my speedo stops working, it goes down to zero, but my rpm gauge still works. I noticed that if I come to a complete stop, the speedo will start working again; or if I stop the bike and turn it off and then back on, it will do its checks without a problem and the speedo will start working properly again. Anybody has an idea what the problem might be and how to fix it? |

First thought is to check the connector from the speed sensor to the wiring harness. |

Is the connection to the speed sensor to the wiring harness under the seat, or behind the front fairing? |

The connection is under the front pulley cover. Another thing you can try is removing the sensor and cleaning it, it attracts transmission debris, sort of like the magnetic drain plug and sometimes that causes the issue's you are having. I was never fortunate enough to have that be the case (cleaning the sensor) work for me, I am on my third replacement. |

I've been having a similar problem for the last few months.
Mine seems to work just fine in the morning but once the tranny gets up to temp it drops to zero and just sits there.
I tried cleaning it but there was no difference. I searched through the spaghetti and found no chaffed or pinched wires. Connector is solid.
This leads me to believe it's a bad sensor. As soon as it gets hot it cuts out like a bad coil.
On Edit: A bad speedo sensor isn't a huge problem and it's exceedingly easy to replace. One screw holds it in place and a new ziptie is used to bundle the wires.
Piece of cake. Easy as pie

I appreciate the comments. I will take a look at the sensor when I get time and report back. I just bought the bike a few weeks ago and any spare time I have, I spend it on the bike riding. |
