I have a 07 XB9R with Jardine Pipe , Race ECM , K&N Filter . I have spent numerous hours Datalogging and working with Mike Cobb with different maps for the ECM . It still has a persistent surging at lower rpm cruzing 2500 to 3500 at minimal throttle . Other than that , the bike runs very strong . Has anyone had any success in fixing this problem ? I have read other threads but have not seen the problem fixed . It has very low miles , I just changed the plugs and they looked OK , I noticed a slight exhaust leak around the header to muffler clamp , could that cause it ? Would it help to add a Dobeck Techlusion Electronic Jet Kit and try that , or would that make things worse ? I also read something about a new method to reset the TPS ? I am using ECM Spy .I am open to anything at this point . |

you know from my experience with buddys that have sportys and buells it's just part of its nature to have this jurky, sputter, fart, what ever you wanna call it at low rpms. This may sound tedious but you may try playing around with different gappings on your spark plugs. You've got quite a lot of play to mess with .038-.048. I myself am going to try this. I also have the same problem in low rpm cruising. But its always had this problem even my buddys with sportys with rebuilt motors have the same problems they have just learned to deal with it. So I've pretty much learned to except it myself. but I would still like to believe there is a way to fix it. |

Thanks for your input . I wondered if that is just a FI sporty motor trait . I don't remember it like that on my 00 Buell M2 , but that had a Carb , but it was modified more than this bike . I to would like to believe there is way to fix it . I would like to hear from others on their experiences with this . |

I did switch to the denso iridium plugs and that got rid of the hesitation that it would do a low throttle. have you checked your static timing to make sure you are at tdc? some bikes have a tendency to be advanced too much. |

I will check that , thanks . I just installed some Denso Plugs , but have not tested it yet . |

well I advanced my static timing by one noch which I believe is 3deg. and I'm very pleased at how it smoothed out the power delivery throughout the whole pwrband. got rid of those pesky dips in my midrange. I might try advancing more until I feel the dips or start pinging. It's an oldschool way of achieving pwr but it still works. reminds of me and my old man working on our camaro using the ass-0-meter as the gauge. |

I feel that on my lightning at about 35mph in second gear, I always thought that I was so close to off throttle that maybe I was turning it on and off and making it worse hanging on with the chugging. I have a race ecm and a D&D I just pick a higher gear to get out of the power band a bit and it all goes away... |

Rather than adjusting the static timing, set it to TDC and go into the timing maps (not the fuel maps) with ECMSpy. Look for glitches in the range in question, try smoothing them out as with a fuel map (advancing timing where it sounds as if its, um, retarded).
Other than that, with no error codes getting thrown at you, I haven't a clue. |
