I am considering both of these. I am no mechanic, but I do like to do the routine stuff - oil change, change spark plugs, adjust primary..., myself, and have done so many times on my sportster. Things seem really shoehorned in on the Buell - how difficult are these routine tasks compared to the sportster?

thank you,

paul

GET THE XB! GET THE XB! I went from a sporty to an XB.................I will never turn back! The spark plugs are a little harder, unless you have the right tools. Oil change and primary are just as easy as the sporty.

Better ride both, and see which of the two gets into your system deeper. What Gunut said about simple maintenance stuff.

I rode the XR1200 this past Sunday at a HD demo ride. Interesting bike, and I was very excited to ride it. Excitement lasted for about 1/2 of the ride. I will take my XB9R over it any day.
And yes, I was disapointed, as I was certain the XR would be my next new bike purchase.

I took a 1125r out for a "monitored" test ride. The salesman was leading the ride on a xr1200 with SE pipes. Halfway through, he offered to switch bikes. Bad move on my part. While it may have been the best sportster I've ridden, it felt like a tractor compared to the Buell.

Absolutely test ride both! Because sales have been so bad lately, H-D/Buell makes it really easy to test ride whatever bike you want to these days. Just stop in a dealership that sells both lines and ask for a back to back test ride so you can compare them for yourself.

Otherwise, your local dealership, http://www.performancehd.com/ , is having a demo day on June 27th. The demo day might be a bit better for comparison because you have the opportunity to see what both bikes are like after they have been broken in.

I like the XR1200 too, but decided on the XB12Ss. The technology gap between the two is pretty wide.

The XR1200 probably has the "look" and better long-range comfort over an XB. But the XB is over 100 lbs. lighter and seems to average about 7-8 more hp than the XR1200. I'll be picking up my new '09 XB12Ss this week and for $8,700, the price difference between the XB12 and XR1200 gets a lot of additional tweaking can be done.

I tested a XR1200 two weeks ago. The first two corners told me all I needed to know - it handles like a tank. I rode the XR for another 30 miles but it did not get any better. It drug it's tail and was not as crisp in the corners as my 06 Uly. I have to admit that it handled way better than any other HD I have ridden (I had three) but still not up to the Uly standard.
