I have a 07 blast, and just had the 1000 mile service done. Went on a ride and no more than 40 miles from picking her up, she would not idle after stopping. Instead of turning back, we continued and I just gave her a little gas at stops. Took back to dealer and they tried to tell me that my carb needed to be disassembled and clean the jets, then they want to charge me for it! They just had it, then it broke. History on the bike, I bought in Feb, and it has 1468 miles on it now (500miles when I bought it) Still under warranty as I bought it from the dealer it was a riders edge bike. They tried to tell me the fact it was an 07 w/1400 miles was the reason the carb needed disassembled and was the problem. She idles fine when starting the day, but after about 20 minutes of riding she dies when I stop. I let it just sit and idle this morning, and she died after 45 minutes. And I have had multiple tanks of gas through it. This sounds like they are trying to screw me, any ideas on the idle issue, are they stringing me along? Thanks, Ted

P3me, if you are using Pikes Peak HD that is half the problem. It could be the carb or the boot but I am sure it is an easy fix. The Blast is a tank. Most everything that needs to be done can be done in your garage. I recommend a service manual to help.

Rebuilding the carb is an easy thing to do. If you want any help let me know. If you are able to get a rebuild kit for the carb I can show you how to do it. I am no expert on the Blast but I know my way around a carburetor. I have heard a lot about the boot for the carb going bad.

Some places to check on this site if you have not already found them in is the thumper board and the CBR section in the Storm Front. If you really want to use a dealer you will want to go to HCHD in Fredrick Colorado (a little out of the way but worth it) and avoid PPHD at all cost unless you want to toss your money away.

Yep PPHD, that is why I questioned them... But warranty so I thought...
I am trying Seafoam and Super unleaded to clean it, works in the Subaru and the lawnmower, so worth a shot. Seems to be running longer w/o dying, so a few more treatments may get it. I already checked the coupler rubber boot by spraying starter fluid to see if it reved as it sucked it down, so the coupler seems good.
Thanks for the offer, I may take you up on it if this doesn't work.

Ok, with it being a 07 I would not think it would need a rebuild unless gas was sitting in it and gummed up.

I was just thinking, if it is still under warranty it seems to me they should fix it. I am not really sure if that would be a warranty item or not. You might want to give BMC customer service a call. The number is in your owners manual and just ask the question. All they can say is no. Be factual and explain what PPHD told you.

You could go to the Court in Session section of this site and ask Court if in fact this would be a warranty item or not.

Or just get a rebuild kit and bring it by the house.

Frank,
With the Blast, you probably don'e even need a rebuild kit.
I have to do my daughters every other year or so (it sits too much...).
It's probably the pilot jet, it sounds like when the bike comes of the auto-enrich, it goes lean.
Easy first step, pop the float bowel off, remove the pilot jet and clean it.

Also, since you are already there, may as well uncork the air screw and set that too.

The Blast is easy to work on, you can have the carb off in about 15 minutes..

Brad, thanks for the info. I gotta say the first time I saw a Blast a local rider had here I told him he was missing an accelerator pump!!! LOL, they do not have one. The blast carb looks to be real easy to work on.

Das Boot! The carb boot that is. Always suspect this first on a Blast. It is the rubber hose connecting the carb to the engine and frequently cracks. It is a $10 part and even bad HD dealers should check this first. It will lead to the symptoms you describe.

That is likely all that is "wrong" but since you live in Colorado it would be good to have the carb rebuilt with jets suitable for the average altitude out here. Cross post this thread in the Thumper forum of Badweb and you will get more input.

If the boot was cracked, would it not cause the engine to rev when spraying starter fluid on it, much like when you diagnose a leak on your car carb/vacume/fuel system?

I can't provide the detailed why or how, only the what. The boot is the big "WHAT" for Blast carb problems. Eliminate it as a source for almost all symptoms first. Do a search on here or even Google and count the number of references to the boot problem you find. The Thumper section has Blast specific troubleshooting too.
