hey guys, so, ill be brutally honest, i dont have the bike yet. im in afghanistan and am gonna get an 09 XB12R when i get back in a few weeks. thing is, i already bought the micron serpent exhaust and plan on getting a k&n air filter. does anyone know if it will still run fine or if it will be necessary (or a good idea) to get a power commander or equivilant. also, which would you recommend getting. thanks.

Folks here w/more engine tuning experience than I will surely chip in, but here goes:

Virtually everyone here feels the power commander is best used as a paper weight for your Buell paperwork. Don't bother. But it is your bike.

The stock ECM generally has the stuff to adapt to the exhaust and intake mods you are planning.

Thank you very much for your service!!!!!

And perhaps Firemanjim and others can give you more ideas re tuning. Suspension mods are the best way in most cases to improve the riding experience, IMHO. HooRah! Dave

Download ECM Spy and get a cable. Read the tuning guide and learn how to use the program. You can find someone here who has a race eeprom which you can download into your stock ecm turning it into a race ecm. Search the Knowledge Vault here there is much to learn. If you can't find an answer post and someone will have an answer for you.

IIRC, and hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong, I don't believe ECMSpy 'supports' '08 and '09 models yet. Believe that is still a work in progress.

I also do remember reading about issues with ECMSPY for '09 model year.
I would check with Mike (xoptiinside.com) or Buelletinboard forum. There is a very long and active thread solely on ECMSPY.
Good luck and thanks for your service. Stay safe.

Even after a Harley parts guy told me the power commander was he way to go the next sales guy who actually did track days with me said it was junk. A D&D or Jardine pipe would help.
