I'm doing some preliminary eyeballing and head scratching as I'm thinking about installing an under the fork clamp steering damper on my '04 XB12S. To gain clearance, the fork legs may need to be lowered a bit in the clamps which exposes the "stopper ring" from under the top triple clamp. The service manual says the ring "allows the correct upper fork clamp load". I'm guessing the ring may seat against a step in the clamp preventing the forks from rising up too far. Anyway, my question is, is it OK to set the fork height so the ring is slightly exposed or does it need to be under the clamp? Thanks.

I've been running my XB forks with the top of the clamp-able part at the top of the upper triple for a couple of years now, with no issues. I don't know what the rings are, but with my heavy bike and the crappy roads around here I probably would've had an issue by now if it were going to present itself.

I would guess it is to make sure the fork legs are at the same height, and nothing more. Maybe someone else can comment on that.

If it's a LSL that your worried about, I haven't had mine touch my fender yet. I was expecting it to at the very rear of the fender. I thought I'd end up trimming the rear 1" off the fender, but mine just doesn't seem to hit.

The very first day I had mine on, along with new front brake pads, I ended up having to make a pretty hairy panic stop with the rear wheel coming off the ground and it still didn't hit. I have an S and I didn't mess around with dropping the forks.

Thanks, guys, for the replies. I dropped the forks so the uppermost alignment lines were flush with the top of the clamp, rigged up the steering damper and went for a ride. All is well and I'm very happy with the results. I'll bet the stopper rings are just to prevent the tubes from being raised too far in the clamps and possibly causing handling problems. The damper was actually from a GSXR.
