So here goes. Only because the books are so vague.

The flywheel has but three markings on it.

The single dot = ???

The double dot = ???

The vertical hash = Top dead center(???)

So considering that TDC is TDC with the cams out. Bring the TDC mark to the center of the hole. Set the cams in proper and the cams are now in synch with the crank. I now have a TDC on the compression stroke and TDC 360 degrees from that. You cant mess up putting the timing rotor in, it is keyed to the pinion shaft. Thus its relationship is hard set to the cams/crank.

Just checking that my assembly is/was correctly thought out. Motor turns over by hand with no sudden unmovable type of lock up. You know like a piston/valve hit.

Note to self: recheck the rotor wiring is in the right positions

Cam installation doesn't have anything to do with TDC marks and if you use TDC as a reference you'll do it wrong.

Just line up the marks on the cams and the mark on the pinion and you're done. You're trying to make it more complicated than it is.

I used the TDC mark to put the pinion mark in the correct frame of reference. All the timing marks then aligned when I set the cams in.

Just checking that I did not mess up with the cams. Yes, I made it sound more complicated than it is.

I am trying to get the static timing correct. Which is where I am at. I have fuel. I have spark. Just not at the correct time. I figure I may have crossed the pick-up wires.

Loki, cam installation has nothing to do with TDC, that's why they don't even mention looking for TDC or TDC marks in the service manual where they talk about cam installation. New Sportsters don't even have a TDC mark or a window to look at it through, and you can install cams in them just fine.

All you do is turn the engine until the mark on the pinion shaft is pointed directly at the number 2 cam. Then install the cams and line up all the marks. You're done.

You'll notice that at this position, neither piston is at TDC although the rear is close. If you've got the engine at TDC when the marks are lined up, you did something wrong.
