I have a 2001 X1 that I just purchased. The bike runs great, but I noticed that I could not get Neutral unless I was coasting. I've done alot of research on this site and decided because I don't know the condition of the primary tensioner I would replace it which seemed simple enough.

Here is where it gets interesting and any info would be greatly appreciated.

#1) The first thing that got my attention was when I removed the transmission drain plug I noticed that there were alot of metal filings that the magnet had caught.

#2) When I removed the primary cover there were grooves ground into the top of the cover. I'm guessing the chain was too loose? Also the primary chain tensioner although in decent shape, has worn grooves on an angle. What would cause this?

#3) I noticed that the shifter shaft had play in it. Up, down and side to side. Is this normal? I know there is a bushing in the primary cover which would probably eliminate this. Also the clutch basket has in and out movement as well as side to side, almost like it had a "wobble". Which takes me to my next question...

#4) The shifter shaft looks like it was rubbing on the back of the starter ring gear. Is it possible that the bushing in the primary cover is worn out, causing excess play? I did notice some slight movement in the shaft before I removed the cover, or is it do to the "wobble" of the clutch basket?

The bike itself shifted beautiful before I took it apart aside from not being able to find neutral. The shifting effort is more than I'm used to, but I've read that this is the nature of the beast. (Or is it?)

I will try to get some pictures posted ASAP

Thanks

3 years and no response, my 99 X1 feels like it has slack (alot) in the primary. Sometimes when taking off from a stop the power delivery has a huge slippage, like there was a half turn slack in the primary, or the clutch had slipped for a complete revolution before catching again. Ideas please...I will pull the primary this week and inspect.

Maybe we were waiting for pictures? : )

For the record:

1) Hopefully old (thin backplate) tensioner shoe pieces, or other "stuff".

2) The grooves in the case are a chain that is too loose. They actually aren't that big a deal and are pretty common... the lubricated primary chain will happily cut through that aluminum. The groves in the primary shoe are a tensioner that was too tight. Though again, it's a wear item, so it wears without hurting anything.

3) The new style shifter (not the boomarang one) should fit pretty tight and not have any external play. The shifter shaft itself of course has play before the pawl engages the pin and rotates the drum.

4) I think that whole shaft assembly is bolted inside the primary, so if it is loose and rubbing, I'd be looking at the parts of it behind the clutch / stator / primary chain assembly, not in front of it (which would include bolts and bushings).

Sloppy linkage and incorrect primary chain tension will absolutely lead to a bike where it is hard to find neutral.

Vecchio, your news is worse, though not as bad as it would be if you had an XB.

The bad news is that this is a classic symptom of worn shift dogs. The dogs engage on the edges, and after a split second, they then *slam* into gear. To fix it, you have to replace the gear pair where the problem is occuring.

Bad news for sure, but you have a cartridge tranny in the tuber, so you can do this yourself if you wish. There are a lot of details to keep track of, but it is doable by a home mechanic... I did it successfully. Check your 5th gear drive assembly while you have the tranny out.

(Disclaimer, if you have a tire worn down to the cords, it can feel like the symptoms you describe also... you loose grip, spin through the cords, then catch again when there is rubber again... but this won't last long before the tire blows and it happens in multiple gears. I bet yours is always happening in second gear, and it is those dogs.)

Thanks for the insight, I feel it in first gear, taking off from a stop. I will feel for the slip in second.

I just completed a 1500 mile weekend and the bike ran wonderful, unfortunately on day two I got a sharp pain behind my left shoulder blade that only got worse with more saddle time. Because of that experience, the X-1 is now a trailer Queen and round town ride only. I may even sell it to get back on a Uly. I will repair the slip, it's only right.

I had a similar problem with my XB12S and my compensating sprocket had to be replaced along with my clutch cable.
