Philip : Battle2Win recommended 15 disks, and not to bother with less than 13 disks. I run 13 disks right now, also with a Force intake. I loose a little bit of top hp but it's a good personal compromise regarding noise level and torque at low and mid-range.

Be careful with your jetting : if you have a look to the carburetion section of the BBS, you'll see some of the findings I got with an air/fuel ratio gauge. Your bike may behave differently but on my 00 M2, a Force intake combined with a SuperTrapp with 13 disks make the carburetion much too rich everywhere. I got far better results with a 185 main jet replacing the OEM 195. At least, check your plugs at wide open throttle...

I picked up a V&H muffler for my 00 M2. But I got a 99 muffler (thought they'd be the same). The intake on the muffler is black to match the 99 header. I kind of like the black and was wondering what my options might be to blacken the my stainless header.

Any ideas/experiences?

Thanks, Dean

Dean,

Call www.Jet-Hot.com. I had a 99 M2 header redone in Sterling Silver but they can do yours in black. About $100 plus shipping.

FYI:
Anybody looking to purchase a White Brothers E-series slip-on for their Buell, we can simplify things by giving the actual part numbers ;

05-250 - '94-98, 2" collector, carbon fiber silencer
05-255 - '94-98, 2" collector, aluminum silencer
05-259 - '99-00, 2.5" collector, carbon fiber silencer
05-261 - '99-00. 2.5" collector, aluminum silencer

The Slip-Ons come as a complete kit and require nothing else (the kit consists of:, elbow, slip-on, never-seize, and a few bolts, nuts, decal, etc).

Race kit header : I'd like to know if this header can be fitted with a SuperTrapp IDS and if the currently-sold version has the rear tube bent behind the frame tube as on 99 and 00 OEM headers. Is is also equipped with a threaded hole in the rear tube for the O2 sensor ?

If the answer is yes to all these questions, I'd go for it with my Trapp, as I expect that the longer tubes compared with OEM provide more torque at low and mid-range (correct me if I'm wrong).

I wonder if the Supertrapp external disc and their
internal disc would take the same number of disc's
to achieve the same level of tune? For instance,
would a bike with the external disc and using 17 disc's to make peak HP and torque, make the same numbers with 17 disc's in the internal disc version?

Hi,

Before the BWB Crash (BBWBC) someone posted about mods to the stock S2 can to improve the pipe response. Recall that it mentioned a dyno tuner at Buell.

Anyone got that in their archives?

Ok here is a pipe slip on that doesn't get much attention from what I have read here. Staintune. I heard and saw one on a guy's M2 at the last Dublin American Sport Bike Night. But can't rememember who's bike it was on. From what I have seen on the net it looks pricy, but I like the looks and sounds of it. Anyone tried it or have any thoughts on it.

Alright, silly Neil can't remember who or where the question was asked about the end caps on the W.B. e-series, but here is the answer from "Mr. W.B." himself:
"No advantage one way or the other when choosing end caps, other than style. Remember that since the last disc is "blank" or blocked off, no exhaust exits through the "end cap".
Now if the discs where not used, surprisingly the "elliptical" end cap (ok they are all elliptical...) makes more power on the dyno over the flat and/or turn-down end caps. We believe this is because the "elliptical" end cap creates somekind plenum chamber affect that most V-Twins seem to like. This added almost 2 hp to the peak part of the powerband, but lost about 4 hp down low. Carburation suffered a little also (when not running the discs).

Concerning Buell stuff on the web site. Actually, up until about 2 months ago, we had all the exhaust on the site for almost a year previous. We are in the process of loading the entire Harley catalog on the site, which will include all products for Buell.

Concerning Carbon systems - Hope to have them ready at the end of this month, or early next month. We are just awaiting the brackets to be finished."

So that may have given you more than you asked for, but what the hey you know it now.
Later all, ride, lean, grin oh yeah
Neil

In my opinion (for what its worth) The ONLY pipe to buy for a Buell is the Daytona Boss. Its made of solid stainless steel and has a LIFE TIME WARANTY! You can only get it at Daytona H-D/Buell.Unlike all the others it mounts with a rubber doughnut much like the Buell motor mounts. Therefore, it doesn't break! Before buying the Boss for my 1999 M2 I looked into after market pipes long and hard and here is what I found. THEY ALL BREAK! Yeah I know, you have brand X on your bike and it hasn't broke (yet) but I've talked to probably five others with the same pipe and it has broke. I have first hand knowledge of the following pipes breaking: Borla, V&H, Force, Super Trapp, Scorpion (Europe), Wileyco, and D&D. My friend Rick put a Two Brothers Pipe on his bike and it has not broke (yet?) but he likes my Daytona Boss better. The Boss sounds better and is not as thick with better clearance. The Boss has a nice deep growl but is not "stupid" loud. The packing I'm told is purchased from NASA and will not burn! The pipe is welded shut and polished to a chrome like finish. Battle to win magazine did an article on the Daytona Boss (Vol. 3 issue 4) and said, "That the Boss works so well at both ends of the spectrum (dyno) is what intrigues us." They further stated, "The bottom line here is that the Boss compares very favorably with the Pro Series header and muffler." I have this pipe on my 1999 M2 and I LOVE IT (as if you couldn't tell)! The pipe sells for $295. Daytona H-D/Buell 290 N. Beach Street Daytona Beach FL. 32114. Phone 904-253-2453. Fax 904-258-0638 www.daytonahd.com NOTE: For all the nay sayers I do not work for Daytona H-D/Buell. I live in Ohio and they are in FL. I'm just a very saisfied customer. If I have a problem with my pipe, you'll be the first to know it.

At last someone has mentioned my pipe! I also researched the after market pipes and decided to roll the dice on the Boss. I talked with Daytona HD and they were more than helpful. It might have been nice if they had sent a simple set of directions for installing them. I figured it out but recieved alot of e mails from other customers after posting its arrival. I have 1000 miles on it so far with no problems. As for sound my buddy with the Fat Boy and a 2 into 1 Thunder Header loves it. My bike will pull the front wheel off the ground where it would'nt before. They make a couple of different sizes. They suggested I go with the 2 and a half. They said the 3 inch would blow the windows out of my house. I had'nt planned on replacing them yet. The sound and performance are here and only time will tell about the reliability. It sure turns some heads!

Hey Thomas, Hey Brian,
Thanks for the encouraging info on the BOSS. I bought my 2000 M2 on October 30th and have been discouraged to hear all the bad luck folks have had with their aftermarket pipes. Please let me know what your recommended jetting changes might be. I've already done the pilot jet swap and drill. Bike was too lean to idle right before. Please email or post pictures when you can. Sorry, but I'm just a dweeb when it comes to computers and don't have the stuff to post pictures with. The Boss looks like a chrome bullet muffler. You know with tapered ends. I can't remember the guys name at Daytona that talked to me, but he worked on the design. He was very knowledgable and I'm sure he could send you dyno results. He also offered to help with any other questions or problems regarding Buells. Also was told that they were filling a big order for Buell. Something about Buell offering the Boss slip-on as aftermarket in the catalog. I don't know how true this is, but if Buell is going to sell them, they might be worth a try. The guy to talk to is in service and has a short 3 letter name. Call down there and ask for him and he will put your worries to rest. It's worth the long distance charge.

Hey Thomas and Brian,

Thanks for posting the good news about the Daytona pipe....replacing my stock can on my '00 M2 is my winter project (alright, one of my winter projects), and I'm not sold on the V & H or the Supertrapp, because of all of the problems you see posted about them.

Just how loud are the Daytona pipes compared to, say, a big-twin'd Harley? I want a louder sound than stock, but I don't know if I want it to sound exactly like a Harley...is there a difference? I guess I'm looking for a slightly tighter sound than the Harleys usually have. What do you think?

Drew, I was not thrilled with the sound of a lot of pipes that I heard. I had all of the same concerns about tone, performance and reliability. I started to buy the 3 inch Boss (race) pipe because I had never heard a Boss before. When I ask Rek ( hey what do you know. His name just came back to me! Still have a few brain cells that are not pickled.) what he would recomend he said 2 1/2. If I was not satisfied I could return it and he would send me the 3. Well I still have the 2 1/2. My first ride I was very self consious about how much noise I was making. The sound had so much more bass to it. By no means does it sound like a Big Twin. It sounds real tight! Almost everytime I take the Buell for a ride I get thumbs up from someone. A couple of times people have rolled their windows down to hear the Boss talk!!

The Boss sounds great. Trust me, you will be happy. It has an aggressive tone but not so loud that if you tour on it your ears will ring. I had a Sportster with screaming eagle slip ons. It was louder. I have about 3000 miles on my Boss and everything looks good. I have had to tighten it up after riding to WV bike week and back. My pipe did not come with directions either. My problem was that Rek told me I could mount it with my existing bolts. WRONG! I had to go to Sears hardware and by stainless bolts but no big deal. I found out about the Boss from the Buell God (Aaron). He posted a picture of it that's in the archives somewhere. How about it Aaron, post it again or a link to it? Thanx in advance!

I am trying to get a Buell performance header, new or used, (part #65396-96y) to go with my Supertrap. I've heard the Supertrap will fit it with no problems. Will the differance in performance over the stock header with Supertrap muffler be worth the trouble and money?

Can anyone help me?

Thanks
Lloyd

P.S. The only aftermarket header I've found is the ASB and they want well over $600 for just a header as compared to Buells $315. Thats stupid greed in my opinion.

Did alot of "jones'ing" over this pipe thing. Finally went out and ordered a V&H. Why ? I think primarily the response I heard regarding customer service. I didn't want to mess with/juggle discs and I like the appearance/sound of the VH. Who knows, maybe VH's teaming with HD will help out the Buell owners. We'll just see how it goes and I did keep my bike 'American'.

I'll be in San Francisco in three weeks from now and I plan to do some Buell purchases and maybe gain some bucks compared with Buell part prices in France. Somebody recommended to me Dudley Perkins, downtown SF. I got in touch with them by fax, twice, no answer so far. So my first question : any other Buell dealer to recommend in San Francisco, who would eventually be willing to do some business with a very remote customer ? Second question : can anybody let me know the price in the USA for a X1 Race kit header (reference 65400-99Y) ? It's 3328 french francs down here (about 440 US$) and maybe the difference is not worth trying to put one in the suitcase and get it damaged by the cargo people. Deep thanks in advance for any input.

I just heard some disturbing news on the Vance & Hines front. I was told by my dealer that Vance and Hines has changed their position on warrantying broken Buell slip-ons. It seems that they have had to replace so many that they are no longer replacing them under warranty. I don't know if this is true, but two separate people at my dealer said this...and they happen to sell a lot of these pipes, by the way. So much for great customer service (perhaps!)

I also saw the Daytona Boss in person...it is built like a tank...I can't imagine the thing breaking. I also heard that Daytona H-D has already shipped 1000 of these to Buell....perhaps this is the new factory Buell race kit??

David:
The IDS will work with the race header. If you purchase one, when you open the box first thing to check is the rear clamp. It's the one about 4" in diameter. It should be the same thickness as the front clamp that goes around the header for support. If it's not the same thickness have the Dealer or suplier contact Supertrap and get the thicker rear strap. The thin one's usuallly last less than 200 miles.
BTW, what is your s/n. My 00' Race Stripe is 521.

Joeb1...one of two things.

1) your DANGEROUSLY lean, fix it or say goodbye to your bike.

2) an exhaust leak...lets air into the pipe at the port and causes a lean-like condition. Less likely if it's occuring at both pipes (as you say).

Have you rejetted the carb (or if your FI, put it on a scanalyzer)? Check for intake leaks, check for cr*p in the carb blocking a jet...but fix it now.

Lastly, find a different shop if they didn't fix this the first time. This is a simple thing to diagnose and repair.

Joe,

What year/model bike? Has it always done it, or is this a new development? Anything changed at the same time it started? How does the bike run?

I've seen this before, but it had to do with screwed up cam timing, causing the exhaust valve to open early. Not likely in your case, particularly if it's a new development and the bike otherwise runs okay.

See ya,

This did not happen when I bought the bike . It happened after the shop (Rockland H-D) put a new ignition in it when the other one (the factory one) went out..
Let me say I am not new to the motorcycle world .
I own "Lil Dees Running Parts". And have restored many older Indians and Harley-Davidsons, and still build motors for a few people now and then. That out of the way , I have never had this happen. I assumed it was a lean problem as it pings also...But it pinged every since the day I bought it , and the pipes never turned BRIGHT RED.
The bike has had a 3 week stay in the shop and still does the same thing ...If this was not under warranty I would fix it my self...it is only 5 months old...How can this stump factory trained mechanics ?.... All the years of building bikes in our shop we never turned a customers pipes RED....

Buell Race Header not available per Buell Cust service " it's being redesigned and is not available until further notice".. I did make sure that they are not confusing the header with the race muffler (on recall) and was told that the header was available separately until the past day or so.

So much for my plans to have the race header substituted for my crash damaged stock unit. State Farm would never know the diff.

Hey all,
with time to spare and a few extra $, I decided to wrap my scuffed and fading stock exhaust tubes ('99 M2) with heat tape and spray with black adhesive heat paint. Seems to work...engine no longer hesitates anywhere, smoother from top to bottom, less heat on right side and I did a nice wrap job so it looks quite acceptable to me.

I'm running the KOOK'S header and muff, and it is GREAT! The sound is awesome, and the power is the way it was s'posed to be. Battel2Win say's it's the only pipe combo that has better numbers than the Buell Race! This mutha is solid as a block of unobtainium!! It is much smaller than the stock unit and the bracket is for real. Guys at my local Harley shop who are used to the wimpy sound of the stock Buell all smiled or nodded in acceptance of my little monster now. I can't stop grining!

Galen,
Try to be a little more conservative in tight right handers than lefts with your new Kooks pipe, or this may happen to you too.
design oversight
