After a little clutch adjustment and a new oil sensor, I took my 2003 Blast (which Ive only had for about 2 weeks) for its first ride. At approx. the 5 mile mile mark, doing about 40MPH, she backfired gently, then put-put-cough-choke....dead. That was it. Mid-ride, no wheel locking just stammered and then nothing. Would not restart. Sounds as if the compression is decreased. Oil and fuel are fine. Did all that general maintenance as well. Im hoping I didnt buy a bike with a blown motor. I'm gonna take her apart tomorrow, if anyone has advice on where to start, or maybe what to look for, id appreciate it. I'm really bummed because this is my first street ride and I really love this bike. Its clean, crisp and perfect for me in every way possible.

Easy enought to check the compression before any major disassembly.

Don't know a lot about the blasts, but if it was my KLR I'd start with the basic "fuel / air / spark / compression" and see which one is missing...

A newbie would have split the cases before checking the plug wire : )

Glad you got it back on the road. My experience with my X1 has taught me that problems which cause the bike to stall or run rough all of a sudden are almost always something very simple like dislodged plug wire, loose battery cable, disconnected sensor, etc.

170? That's the stock jet setting I believe. What other mods have you done? What's the slow jet? A/F screw been adjusted? When you say cuts out, does the rev limiter kick in? Are you in 5th gear?
