2007 XB12. Rode bike for 20min all fine. Drained oil. Left overnight. Did not change oil filter. Added new oil. Started up and idle... all ok for about 30-40secs then red oil warning light comes on. Shut down check oil level which is fine....start again. Oil light goes off briefly then back on after a couple of seconds. Tried this 3 times briefly and exactly the same. This is weird. Nothing has ever gone wrong with this bike. Has anyone experienced such a thing?

You drained the right oil, right? The gearbox and engine are completely separate... People coming from imports that are used to one hole and one drain can easily get crossed up.

Not trying to insult you, just trying to check off a simple error that has happened to people before.

As a point of trivia, an XB will go 2.5 laps at a race pace with no oil in the transmission before catastrophic failure. : )

Reep is your trivia first hand or second hand??? Also how big the track was. Is catastrophic failure kinda like spontaneous disassembly if not what is the difference.

Second hand... it's happened twice that I have heard of... one was a magazine reviewer or something at a track, and I think it happened again to a guy at Deals Gap. I think the tranny just locks in gear, or the rear wheel locks up.

Now on the KLR-250, I think I have first hand experience breaking just about everything that can be broken... : )

yes Reep.......... drained and replaced the engine oil only. Correct quantity and grade.

I know you didn't replace it, but you didn't remove the oil filter either, did you?

When you put them back in, they are supposed to be 2/3rds full.

I had the idiot light pressure sender wire pop off my M2 oil sensor once. Once of those "oh crap, if only the wire popped off" moments in a panic'd shut down when I saw the light go on... where it turned out well for once. : )

no I did not remove the oil filter. How I wish it had been so obvious.
Where is the oil sensor located?

Not sure on the XB... If I get a chance I'll go crack open the service manual.

Any other mods to the bike? The oil filter is the same as the one for a Corolla I think, might be worth just doing another oil change (with filter) by the book and see if it gets better. It's easy enough...

ok. Drained oil again. Removed and replaced filter (with the recommended amount of oil added). Added engine oil and now it works!!
It must have been an air bubble in one of the oil lines. Removing the filter must have allowed the air bubble to clear. An air bubble is what I suspected but did not want to influence anyones responses. Cannot believe it though as you should not need to replace filter every time.

This is true of my old Kawasaki Vulcan 750 as well. You have to loosen the oil filter while the engine is running, then retighten and the oil pressure issue disappears.
