This morning I cranked by 99 Buell x-1 Lightning. The bike idled for about 2 minutes then died. There is plenty of gas in the bike, and the temperature was 25 degrees. I ended up having to put a charger on the battery. Once I tried to crank the bike again, it would turn over and "hit", but would not start. The bike backfired once and the started clicking. Any ideas? Please help, this is a first Buell for me and I am still a little confused.

How many mileage has it ? ... when was the last time you did a TPS reset?....,fuel filter?....,Spark plugs condition?...,check battery voltage at idle before and after start up ....,if it is good, I would check the battery terminals and the wiring connections and all ground connections.

Have you checked for trouble codes?.

Have you ECMSPY?, if so, try to run a diagnostic for see how goes all components, (Fuel Pump, coil front and rear, Injectors) and run for Troubles Codes.

Begins with the simplest things.

Keep us updated on what you find.

If the starter made clicking noises again, the battery is probably still not fully charged.

To check this out, measure the battery voltage after it has been on a charge overnight. Remove the charger and measure the voltage with a multimeter. If it's
12.8 VDC or higher = 100% charged
12.6 = 75%
12.3 = 50%
12.0 = 25%
11.8 = 0% charged

Beullisticx1 and Sparky,
Thanks for the help. The battery turns out to be toast. I replaced the plugs and battery and she's running great now. I own a 1999 Buell x-1 Lightning, where is the tps located on this bike? Also, is there an idle adjustment screw?

Ah, time for a factory service manual. Glad you found the problem. The TPS is located on the side of the throttle body. Setting the TPS requires ECMSPY and a cable, or a visit to the dealer. And the idle adjust is a cable that runs over to the left side of the engine, between the cyls. TPS re-set first.

Earliest 99 X1 don't have a remote idle adjuster cable, there is a Buell Motorcycle Service Bulletins B-017 for upgrade it.

Take a look:

Akbuell and Buellisticx1,
Thanks for the help. Some things seem so simple when someone is willing to point you in the right direction. Thanks again.

Hi, I have a similar problem. I have a 2002 blast and its turning over and I even had it running several times. But it has real problems with cold starting. To the point when i drain the battery trying to start it. I have changed the plug today and I am going to attempt to push start it and see if I can get it started. But why is it having these problems? The bike has only 850 miles. It has new gas in it and I even cleaned out the carbs. Do the automatic chokes go bad in these bikes?

please help,,,, i am pulling my hair out
