i have a 08 12s and i want to do a wrinkle finish on my primary now if i do this on the cam side is it a pain in the rear to take the cover off...

Short answer is yes.
Longer answer: Removing the cam cover requires removing at least one of the rocker boxes from the cylinder head to release the forces being exerted on the cams by the valve springs. The other cylinder/piston combo would have to be at TDC on the compression stroke to avoid removing it's rocker box.
