Just replaced the clutch on my 00 X1 with the barnett's 9/8 and the clutch is still slipping. it will roll at idle, but won't go any faster and will still run while in gear and standing still. I'm thinking it may be the clutch spring (hoping it is), as I may have over compressed it while removing it. Nobody has one in stock, so I'll have to order it, any other ideas/suggestions?

Edit: I bet the dealer actually has the spring, just got all confused cause its a buell. Anyone got a pn? Also, I may not have lined up the release mechanism tabs properly, looks like I'll be tearing back into it tomorrow.

You just might want to check if the belt's drive pulley has sheared its teeth. The mainshaft will spin and may transfer some torque but not enough to drive the pulley completely.

Otherwise, double check your free-play adjustment per the book at the ball-and-ramp mechanism (screw adjustment 1/4 turn back from just bottoming) and the cable adjuster (approx 1/16-1/8 inch play at end of cable and clutch lever handle bracket).

I've got the free-play set correctly, and I'm pretty sure its not the belt drive pulley as when the wheel spins I can see the clutch basket spinning, but the primary drive won't spin. How easy/hard is it to over-compress the spring?

The service manual warns against over compressing the spring plate because damage to the pressure plate may occur.

Regarding the diaphragm spring, before you installed it, did you notice if it still had a somewhat conical shape with the spring on a flat surface and the spring fingers raised up slightly? If so, it's probably OK, but if it were completely flat, it's probably toast.

Another thing, were there any grooves or burrs in the slots of the clutch basket? These imperfections may hinder proper operation of the clutch if not smoothed or otherwise corrected, although I don't think that would cause the clutch to free-wheel.

Was gonna open it up today, but decided to wait till tomorrow so I don't have to be rushed. I'm going to go through everything again, and I'll make sure I check out the basket but the bike only has 8.6k on it. Improper adjustment was why it went out, should've gone over everything when i first got it .
The stock friction plate's weren't too badly worn so I'm pretty sure its the diaphram spring, anyone got a PN please?

Hi there. My 2000-2001 parts book says the Spring diaphram for the M2 is(36792-91). I would think it should be the same for your bike. Just trying to help and good luck.

Thanks I appreciate it. I'm pretty sure that will work as well, funnily enough the parts guy at the dealership asked me "are you sure it's not an M2 Cyclone" so hopefully that means they have it. I just tried not to laugh when he asked me that.

You did discard the "grenade plate", the spring plate that self-destructs after x miles, when you installed the Barnett parts, right?

I got it working today, forgot to put in the damper plate/spring thing the barnett's comes with (it was hiding in the box). However, now when I'm in 1st or 5th you can still click it down or up like there's more gears.
