I just priced out a new crankshaft for my xb9 for 545 bucks!!!!! I looked in the parts manual and found the crankshaft and rods are sold as one!! Is this true? And if it is what the Hec? I have the top end of the bike tore down right now and my front connecting rod is loose. Is there any way to just replace the rods? Help me please!!!!

Is there any way to just replace the rods?

It's possible to disassemble the crankshaft and swap big end bearings, but I don't think a Buell workshop will do this.

You must have this done in a workshop specialized on repairing such things. As you already found out, rods are not sold separately. Lower and upper rod bearings are, but have to be honed to finished size. Crankshaft pin can be replaced also. It's a good idea to align/true/lighten the crankshaft after this.

so i guess we are talking about a machine shop huh? I understand that it has to be honed and the right size bearings installed, but by what means do you mean when you say lighten the crankshaft? do you mean just have the shop shave it and balance it? Would it end up being the same to buy new compared to haveing all the machine work done?

I gave mine to an independent motorbike workshop.

but by what means do you mean when you say lighten the crankshaft

Reduce weight. Also the primary sprocket. When the crankshaft is spreaded, the primary starts tumbling and will unbalance the crankshaft even more.

Would it end up being the same to buy new compared to haveing all the machine work done?

No machine shop whith the slightest pride left for his work would give to a customer what Buell is selling every day. It may not necessarily be cheaper than the price quoted above. But you will know what you get and whom to beat if not.

I also have the top end off of my XB9 and found that my front cyl. rod has some side to side play. Thought that i needed to replace but the mechanic at the Harley dealer told me that that's normal. you should not have any top to bottom movement but side to side is probably o.k. Best thing to do is check with your local dealer/mechanic, b/c you dont want to replace this unless there's no other option.

I take it that there is room for improvement then Gunter?
