2000 model Buell motor air cooled...It had FI which I replaced with a carb....After 10-15 miles the bike stalls and the rear cylinder plug is fouled, black and sooty....The front plug looks good. On checking compression I found the rear is 180 and the front is 150...both hold compression....Any ideas on what the problem is??

I had exactly the same symptoms on my 99 X1 and after checked several things turned out be worn valve seals.

The compression test was 150 psi in rear cylinder and 120 psi in front with 40.000 miles on it.

The manual service says: Compression is normal if final readings are 120 psi or more and do not indicate more than a 10 psi variance between cylinders.

Hope that helps!.

Regards.

Hey good idea. The compression is there but oil would be leaking down the valve stem and guides thus the sooty plugs. Your rear cylinder is trying to be a 2 stroke.

Naw,something else with that much compression. Have to be tons of oil to foul a plug that fast. Either weak spark or too much fuel for some reason. What does the front plug look like.

It's okay. People doing so don't deserve any better.

Funny you said that Id073897...I am just baffled by folks who take a generally well designed and reliable FI system which can be modified and infinitely adjusted with minimum cost and spend the money to convert to an old technology...
Someone please help me understand the advantages of switching to a carb system because it is not intuitive...

Come on Guys (and Gals) are we not here to help (not criticize them). If a chopper needed help along side the road would you just drive by?

Based on his profile, I am guessing this is a chopper (not that it matters).

With a carb, a fuel related issue would affect both cylinders the same wouldn't it?

When you changed to a carb, did you switch out the ignition system to the carb version as well?

If you converted and X1 or S3 motor, you MUST change out the ignition rotor.
The FI version has too many slots.
The motor will run like crap.
You might need to switch coils as well. I don't remember if the FI's are single fire or not.

Jim, can you answer that one?
