When I purchased my xb 3500 miles ago I was told the only thing I need to do is check the oil and bring it in every 5k miles. Seems like there should be more to check. Also 5K seems like a long time between oil and 10 between filters? Any advice or tips? | ||

You'll want an Owner's manual & Factory service manual. Seems like a long time to me, too. Oil 'quality' to fit long change intervals in an air-cooled engine, seems important, too. | ||

Doubling the oil exchange rate, regardless of any manual recommendations is a good rule of thumb. You could always run it through a fine coffee filter in the mean time. Kind of a pain, though. | ||

This may, however be a fetish on my part, as it has never led me wrong from the humble Volkswagon/Norton combo of my youth to current regime of Buells and 20+ year old cars. | ||

I'm an oil changing nut . . . . mostly out of habit . . .and change the Mobil 1 in my pick-up at 3,000 intervals. But I know all the new Porsches are 10,000 intervals and folks seem perfectly content. Oil is better than anyone ever dreamed and even the cheapest oils are superior quality as compared to the day when I had the 3,000 interval banged in my head. | ||

There was an oil study out on the web... I wouldn't go 10k on an air cooled motor. 5k is rational (for full synthetic), but the oil you take out is substantially degraded from the oil you are puttting in. It's still working though... Like Court, old habits die hard with me. The cars get oil changed at 5k miles, the bikes get it changed at 3500. Both intervals likely have a good 20-50% safety margin. | ||

If an engine does not get hot and cook the oil, no reason the oil can't go as long in an air-cooler as a water-cooler. Getting oil up to proper temp in cold weather may be a bigger issue for many people during off-summer riding. | ||

Every 6k I change oil and filter every 6k, in all my bikes, if they need it or not. Has not failed me in 45 bikes and 47 years of riding. | ||
