So I am still running the stock exhaust on my 04 xb12r, I have modded the air box and I have the K&N filter.
I want to install the race ecm, but Im not sure I'm ready for the ecmspy.
will I get noticeable gains without tuning?
from what I have read I might have a slight lean problem but other than that what might I be getting into? Any advice?

If you buy and install a race ecm, i dont think it will actuate the stock muffler's servo. ecm spycables are nearly free compared to a race ecm and with a spy cable you can do whatever you want on mods. the race ecm is designed to work with buell's race filter and race muffler and is not 100% compatible with other options(anything more open will be lean). megalog viewer is a free download and very easy to use. it is about the only way one can affordably(free) and accurately tune for custom modifications. it's pretty easy to use the programs after a couple days once you figure everything out. i have an 07 xb9sx and a friend has an X1 lightning. he has a high flow custom intake and exhaust and is running the race ecm. he complained of high engine temps and idle problems. after logging a ride with the spycable and running it through megalog viewer, it was very clear that he was running pretty damn lean across the grid. there is nothing leaner than a motorcycle at idle or cruise, imagine it after modifications...
the race ecm would enrich the mixture enough for the intake, but, with no muffler actuation, it would severely flood the engine and fall on its face under a heavy load.

thanks!

Is it possible to tune the stock ecm with ecmspy and megalog?

Do i need a wideband O2 or anything like that?

Buellbuster,
There is tons of info on this site to answer your questions (or even confuse you). The general answer though is that you can do whatever you need to do to tune your bike with the ECMSpy and cable. You can make your stock ECM act as if it's a Race ECM etc. Do a search, sit down with a cup of coffee, or a beer, and spend a few hours taking notes. You will get an education and a good understanding of what is possible. Yes, a wideband O2 sensor is perfect but not needed if you don't use a dyno, which is also perfect but expensive. For your average daily rider/mechanic you can do more than you could ever imagine with the ECMSpy. I can think of at least 2 guys on here that are considered "experts" using the ECMSpy on Buells, Gunter over in Europe and Mike of Xoptinside fame here in the U.S. (Not sure of that spelling.) They will offer you any advice and answer any question. Or preferably just post here so they and the rest of us can help. Good luck and have fun!
