After seeing written references to filling tranny oil to the bottom of the "clutch diaphragm spring" and other vague descriptions (including blurry, misleading photos in the Owners Manual and Service Manual), I finally found a clear diagram that makes it easy to tell if your fluid is at the right level or not. Just shine a flashlight downward into the clutch inspection opening and compare with this diagram:





By the way, if you have overfilled, the simplest and cheapest solution is to use a cheap gasoline siphon pump to pull a little of the oil back out. I found one for $2 at AutoZone, it was behind the counter (not on display) so you may have to ask for it.

That's a good diagram Bitbear. Do you set the level with the bike on the sidestand?

Fasted is correct; the bike must be level. If you've drained the oil first you can refill with one quart and you'll be fine. Some say a few ounces short of a quart but the difference isn't enough to worry about.

Many on BadWeb set bolts or re-bar into the rear axle then tip one side then the other up and onto jack stands on each side of the axle. It's easy to get the rear wheel up an inch or two off the floor -- and level -- using this method.

There are some good photos of how to do it somewhere in the Thumper section.

I thought level meant keeping the bike straight up vertical compared to the ground. Why raise the rear wheel?

By raising the rear wheel up slightly -- evenly on each side -- your are making the bike level (from right to left). Raise it just a little, like an inch. When you've done this, you have eliminated the lean of the bike when it is resting on its kick stand. Make sense?
