I changed the tranny oil on my my new 2003 XB9S and I've noticed just little oil seep around the bottom and rear of the cover. The bike has only 1400 miles on it so this was the first change. I didn't replace the gasket -- is that important to prevent leakage? Is using a torque wrench on the torx screws crucial? If so, can anyone recommend a place to buy one? Thanks for any advice!! | ||

Most if not all service manuals call for a new gasket to be installed each time the cover is removed. A torque wrench is not absolutely necessary but is nice to have if you are going to do your own maintenance. Install TORX screws w/ washers tighten in a crosswise pattern. Frosty... There must be omemistake/confusion. I'm referring to the Clutch Inspection Cover. According to my service manual the Torx fasteners need 7 - 9 pounds of torque. Also, my manual doesn't mention the need for a new gasket. Am I missing something? I'm on my way to get one anyway. Also, I have a torque wrench but the long-lever type used for plugs and heavy torqueing and what I'd love to find is a small torque wrench that adjusts up to 10 ft. pounds. Most are fairly pricey. | ||

you'll be fine without new gaskets. just take the cover off again and reseat it making sure the gaskets not squished out of shape somewhere. then do up the screws alternating like you were doing the wheelnuts on a car, to ensure even pressure across the cover. they're just little screws, so no torque wrench is neccessary. do them up tight, but you should not have to use a lot of pressure to do so. easy. |
