I do believe I've read all of the oil filter threads and don't remember seeing one that mentioned that the widely used Motorcraft filter would void the engine warrantee. If I missed something, go ahead and call me a dumba$$ and point me to the thread!!

At 1600 fun miles, my 2002 X1 White Lightning experienced a dead battery and some major electrical problems. It's at the local dealer right now. I called for an update this morning and was told that the FL-1A Filter on my bike was a major NO NO due the the anti return valve design of the filter. My thoughts are that there is no WAY the pressure could rise to the point where it would even function without oil blowing out of the breathers, etc.?? I have some experience with them in other applications. On top of all this they said the rear cylinder seems to be making some funny noises :(

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I still love my Buell but I'd hoped my first post would have been on a more happy note!!

Thanks in advance,

Neil Blackwood

Are they claiming that the FL-1A does not have an anti-drain back valve?

Wow unfortunately I do not have any insight into you warranty issue. However I just want to say those are some AWESOME knives! Very nice indeed! Welcome to the board! I bet someone will have some insight. From what I have been able to pick up from a lot of the warranty threads that have popped up lately, it seems to be basicly up to the dealer on what they want to accept. If you don't like thier answer try getting a second opinion at another Buell authorized dealer if that is an option for you. Best of luck!

P.S. I know "if you have to ask you cant afford it" but about how much does one of those Henchmen knives run??

Blake,
I'm not sure WHAT he means. I'm assuming that he knows the filter has the valve but is claiming that it COULD allow reverse flow or opening of the valve under high pressure.

What the service manager said was that an automotive "type" filter is not of the proper design for the Buell!! He also said it would allow debris to flow BACK into the engine, creating problems, thus......voiding the warantee. In order to stay within the warrantee parameters, I should ONLY use a Buell filter!! There is no mention of this in my owners manual.

Fuscat,

Thanks for the compliments....Email inbound!! Unfortunately, I'm backlogged until late next year.

Neil,
Sounds like complete BS to me.

I agree with Blake. Complete BS. That being said, I would probably just run the Harley filters for the life of my warranty (which I never had in the first place, and even if I had it would have been nearly worthless due to the headaches of dealing with my Cincinnati dealer) just to save the grief of arguing about it.

I did notice that my front motor mount heim joint is tatooing my FL1A. Not punching a hole, but adding a nice dent. Probably means its time to replace my isolators, which I was hoping held up until my belt broke so I could do them all at once.

Blake,

I agree 100%!! If they say that this engine noise was caused by the improper filter.......I'm going to loose it :)

Reepicheep,

I also agree with running the HD filters to prevent any FURTHER BS with the dealer. My only concern is that I'll have to do this for the next 5 years due to my extended warrantee!!

My filter has plenty of clearance around it. I just check it often to make sure it's still tight. Also, I had just made a new drain plug that uses a hose clamp around it. The original plug and clamp seemed like a disaster just waiting to happen. I guess it's a good thing that I never got to install it before the bike broke down :)

Oils cheap and you only need the HD filter on it when you take it to the shop -- just thinking out loud and not trying to stir up any trouble.

If I were worried about my filter causing issues it would never be seen at my dealership with anything but the factory approved unit.

Bigdaddy,

Very good point!! I just wish I new about what was factory approved or NOT ahead of time. Again, my fault for not looking more into things when I changed my oil. The Motorcraft filter not being "factory approved" never crossed my mind. If my manual said something like "using anything but a factory approved HD oil filter will void your warrantee" this wouldn't be an issue right now.

Just a minor point...... Changing to an HD filter prior to a planned trip to the dealership is one thing. An unplanned, towed in trip is another. Considering this, and the way my situation worked out, I would have had to have the bike towed back to my house THEN to the dealer. OR......I'd have to carry around an HD Filter with me while I was riding!! I'm thinking that it's a bunch of BS but I'll just go along and play by HD's rules until my warrantee is up.

Yep, a logistical nightmare that we shouldn't have to deal with. I was just thinking out loud.

I would love to have The Skirmish to replace my ageing SOG. When will they be available? I love knives!

Greg,

I often think outloud myself!!

The Skirmish's are also way, WAY behind. I only finish 1-2 per month and have orders for about 50 of them :( I need a CNC milling machine BAD!!

Hey Neil,

Keep me in mind if you get the CNC up and running. I 'need' a Skirmish. I also 'need' a black XB12R, Electra Glide Standard with 103, S2, a kitted out Sporty, big block 1970 Monte Carlo, 302 Z28 -- man, I got some needs. Need me a rich woman to keep me up I guess?

Cowboy,

No problems with the FL-1A seems to be the general consensus! I'm hoping my 1600 mile problems are just a one time "glitch". I hope I reach 28000 without anymore problems!!

think the warranty issue is dealer to dealer, my dealer said, " wow, I didnt realize that filter would fit, cool idea"..... so get a second opinion.
