After mounting new tires yesterday and tightening down the front axle, i noticed this gap. It seems wrong to me, can someone verify? Is there supposed to be a gap like this between the wheel and the left side fork leg? The other side is flush with no gap. I haven't ridden on it yet.  | ||

That's normal. The axle is shouldered to properly preload the wheel bearings and internal spacer. The left fork leg clamps to the axle. But did you follow all the procedures to the letter in the service manual when reinstallng the front wheel or did you just assemble the parts? Specifically it says 1) apply Anti-Seize lube to axle, 2) with pinch fasteners loose, thread axle into right fork, 3) compress the front suspension to ensure that the forks are free and not binding, 4) tighten pinch fasteners. If you don't compress the suspension, the forks could wind up not parallel resulting in harsh suspension action and possibly causing premature wear on the brake rotor and pads. | ||

Thanks for the get-back. Check mark for all those things except the fork compression. I guess I'll loosen the pinch bolts again and compress the fork, then retighten the pinch bolts. Makes sense about the shouldered axle, just looks wrong if you've never looked at it closely before. |
