ok i bought my buell about a month ago with about a 2500 miles on it.. the lady assured me it wasn't a riders edge bike or anything.. i test drove it for over an hour and it shifted just fine into first from neutral.. i get it home later that night and get on it to take it around town and i go to put it in first and it grinds and chatters into gear and its been doing it ever since..if anyone has any advice for me or any idea of how to fix it with out costing me a ton of money it would be greatly appreciated!!! its a little irritating having to put it into first before i even start it!

I'm guessing the clutch cable is going out of adjustment. It's easy to check.

Make sure the clutch cable has about 1/16 inch freeplay where the cable fits into the clutch lever handlebar mount. That's obtained by gently pulling on the cable and fingering the lever back and forth slightly.

Next, verify there is the proper amount of oil in the primary case which holds the oil for the primary chain, clutch and trans. Look in the owners manual for more info.

And find out from the previous owner what type of oil was put in the trans and when. You might want to consider using Harley's Syn3. This is a synthetic oil that generally helps smooth clutch action which makes shifting gears easier.

Thirdly, if all the above is OK, try lubing the clutch cable. A quicky way to do this is to position the bike so that the end of the clutch cable at the lever is pointing up and drip some oil onto the inner cable, preferably cable lube from a bicycle or motorcycle shop.

A better way is to use a specialty cable luber. These are fairly low cost items that have a fitting that goes on the end of the cable for an aerosol can of lube to pressure squirt oil throughout the cable. This will make the clutch action feel like new again.

Chevy72 - The Blast does grind when going from neutral to first, particularly when it is cold. It's hard to tell w/o listening if yours is abnormal, or just grinding like they all do.

One trick to make it work is with it in neutral, pull the clutch and rev the engine slightly for a second. Then let the RPM return to normal before putting it in first.

My experience shows that the Blast tends to benefit from adjusting the shifter pawl. Make sure you have a #32 drill bit (I think that's the size) handy. Do not use even one size bigger or smaller - as shift action will suck.

Any Blast I've adjusted the pawl on has wound up shifting like a TOTALLY DIFFERENT BIKE. Yeah, the heavy flywheel coupled with a cold motor & primary fluid plus the high idle when the auto choke is, uh, choking (OK, enrichening) all conspire to make your N-1 shift noisy - but a nice firm (not abusive) and deliberate foot helps much too.

ok thats good to know that its grinding is somewhat normal.. yeah it usually happens when its cold.. but sometimes it tends to happen even after i ride it for a little bit too..i turned the idle down some so it doesnt idle up so high when i start it, also i have changed all the fluids and put in HD formula
