So I decided to check my old oil pump to see why it had a tight spot. What I found was a bit startling.

Two of these steel shards were wedged in the gearcase scavenge opening where they marred up the top of the scavenge gerotors, and the other was welded to the outer gerotor gear, which was causing that tight spot. By the multiple marks that one had danced about in there some first before becoming a permanent attachment. They busted off an XB-style lower spring retainer where the sharp end of the spring chipped pieces off and got underneath the retainer...cocking it and ruining the valve seal. I originally investigated the problem because my rear cylinder was burning a lot of oil when I first did my XB-head conversion. I always wondered where those pieces ended up, and had since forgotten all about it. They were in that pump for over 7500 miles. I'd say I was very lucky to not have had a catastrophic failure.

I've never seen an inside out gear like that. Pretty cool.

Glad it didn't fail on you.

WOW!

Maybe those HD engineers knew what they were doing when they designed that dry sump oil system???
