Ran into a friend yesterday who's heavily involved in the HD scene, I told him I was leaning towards the Lightning Long. He told me that he's seen alot of cases of rear cyl. overheating if ridden aggresively or if modified (ie. compression, cams, etc.). I don't want to do frequent topend jobs, anyone have this happen. Evidently this guy's mech. buddies have renamed the Firebolt the Firebomb. I'm thinking it may be excess heat created by lean ECM settings. I'm really set on getting a Buell, but it'll be a bummer if this is a bike that has lots of problems. My plan is to go a long, long time before I lay eyes on the pistons. Basically I want to buy a bike, have the ECM reset from the EPA settings, hang a better muffler, and just ride it. What's anyone think?

HD's may overheat....Buells do not. If your friend has seen a lot of overheating, it was more than likely on no cooling fan hd's...... Get the Buell like you've planned,ride it, don't worry, BE HAPPY !!

buy a 1125r. just bought one, and ive drove xb12's and they just cant touch a 1125r.

i think the 1125 has better handling too.
but im kinda biase(sp?) the 1125 is just so wonderful. thats my .02's on it.

It was definately Buells he was talking about. But searching the web hasn't pointed to any evidence of this being a prevalent issue, so I'm going to go ahead. Gonna fix up the Sportster, save all winter, when Spring comes, I'll sell the Sporty and go hunting for an XB12Ss. I'll be looking used because of sales tax issues in Illinois. Anything I should avoid from '06 to '08? The 1125R is interesting, but I'm looking for a more Sport/Tour arrangement, maybe they'll build one down the road.

The '08s have lots of improvements over the prior years but a lot of '08 owners are complaining of reduced fuel mileage and excessive heat. I believe these are both the result of leaner EPA mandated emission specs.
If you are interested in sport touring you might consider a Ulysses over the Ss.

I had considered a Uly, just thought I'd save a buck on a XB12Ss, put soft luggage on it, and over time piece together a Uly tail section & hard bags. The XB12TT is another consideration as I understand they had the best suspension of the long wheelbase XB models.

Regarding the heat issue. I have an XB12s MY06. How effective are the plastic air ducts/covers (each side of the cylinders)? It gets warm over here in Australia (high 90's) and I was wondering if it would be better to remove the ducts/covers to allow more cooling air around the front and rear cylinders.

There to direct air where it should go when at a lower speed. The fan will pull air from the front and over the rear cylinder.
Take them off and the fan will still pull air but not over the cylinder so much.

I have installed an aftermarket FreeSpirits right air scoop. It really helped with cooling the rear cylinder, and also I think the motor pulls stronger now. I really recommend it.
