i bought a xb9 sprocket for my 08 xb12...sold the 08 and have an 06 now... the 06 sprocket attaches with a nut and the 08 uses a bolt... other than that, i cant see the difference in the actual sprocket...i want to put the 08 sprocket on the 06, but i see that asb says it wont fit..

the only difference i can see, is the 08 version comes with the rotor already installed on the sprocket... nallin racing said the sprockets are the same... anyone else know why it cant be done?

The replacement for the '07 sprockets are quite different from the sprockets that come with the '07 bike. The original is much heavier with only a small hole in the centre for the spline. The replacement is very open in the centre at the back and has bolt holes that I thought looked like they would fit the '08. The only thing is that for the replacement '07 and the new '08 sprockets I have been given different part numbers.

The new Ulys seem to have a different arrangement again where you can't order the sprocket separate from the stator cover.

If the only difference that you see when you measure is the number of teeth then that is a pretty good start. The important features I think are the sizes, shape and the bolt holes that I guess are only for the later models.

This is the upgraded version for a 2007 XB12



It is very different from the original. Is this what your '08 version looks like?

installation complete... the 08 uses a lower torque setting on the attachment bolt... the sprocket is also lighter and looks like some metal was machined off... everything else is pretty much the same as previous years...

That's interesting Werewulf. The replacement for the '07 is machined out significantly at the rear and is much lighter than the older version it replaced.

I was expecting it to be the same as the '08, and was surprised it was a different part number. Perhaps they have given it two numbers because of the way the inventory works. It is hard to imagine why the '08 and the revision for earlier models would be different parts if the basic characteristics are the same.

I have one that looks exactly like the one above, as far as I can tell - it's pn 40290-04A - the back side is hollowed out.

I got it to use for overdrive on a Blast, but now I'm wondering if it will fit...

40290-04A is the upgraded part number for the 2007 XB12 38 tooth pulley (shown the picture above - hollowed out at the back). The original 2007 XB9 34 tooth version was a 40241-02. Maybe you could see if it is the same number as your original.

The - (instead of .) in the part number I think means it is an H-D part and not Buell specific, so gives one more reason to take a punt.

Does anybody know the exact torque procedure of this new 2008 version? I heard it's a preliminary torque and then a final turn of xx degrees to have it completely fixed?

Any idea? Thanks a lot, i asked in all forums and it was a quite disappointing feedback ...

Installation procedure for the 08 engine sprocket. From the Service Manual.........

Note

Prior to installing the engine sprocket bolt and the clutch hub nut, the threads on the sprocket shaft, sprocket bolt, mainshaft and clutch hub nut must be thoroughly cleaned to remove any oil that might contaminate and interfere with the locking agent.


a. Install SPROCKET LOCKING LINK (part no. HD-38362 for the XB9 models or HD-46283 for the XB12 models.

b. Apply two or three drops of LOCTITE 271 (red) onto the threads of the sprocket shaft.

c. Install engine sprocket bolt. Tighten to 155-165 ft-lbs (210-224 Nm).

'removed note about both clutch nut and engine sprocket screw were left hand, I was wrong, only the clutch nut is left hand'

08+ has a bigger diameter shaft than 07- and the pulleys aren't interchangable.

Werewolf I've heard of some riders ordering an 08+ sprocket and being supplied the modified 07 pulley. Maybe that happened to you. From 08 the pulley wasn't available without the rotor cover.

Yes, the 155-165 ft-lbs (210-224 Nm)torque is for the part # 4589 screw.

I only mentioned the clutch nut because it also must be cleaned, and is a left hand thread, and will be removed/reinstalled at the same time as the engine sprocket.

Whowhh .... much .... Seems to be 12.9 of material with highest stress resistance ...

and the nut of the Clutch mainshaft nut has to be fixed with 95 to 108 Nm, no changes through all manufacturing years?

Please note: old Engine sprocket nut (up to 2008) has to be fixed with 325 - 350 Nm !! ( These Buell enginieerig guys are crazy and under special drugs ...)

Does anybody know the inch size of the mainshaft nut for ordering the suitable tool?

(it's 30 mm measured on the flanges) I looked in the conversion tables, but these end at 1 Inch measures.

The answer in the german forum was stunning, because an engine repair dealer (Lucky = Norbert Lackinger from Luckhands) took this screw from his stock and posted:

THE ROTOR SCREW IS RIGHT THREADED !!!!
