So I'v got a 98 Cyclone M2, and after a fiew times of cleaning with various compounds such as "purple stuff" or "mean green and like cleaners, I found that Gunk "citrus" to be the best non- streaking cleaner. Spray on cold, wait 10-15 minuates, and with a high presure garden nozel, just spray it off and rinse well, ie. 1-2 minuates. So this method didn't leave any runs, I think you will know what I mean if you'v tried stronger cleaners, but the"citrus" dosnt leave the streaks and such, worked to my satisfaction, and I'm sort of particular about the looks of My Cyclone. ..........OK NOW TO THE POINT OF THIS THREAD. So having streaked wheels, I wanted to either paint them, or strip them, I chose the later. I went to Napa and Bought "Gasket remover" a blue can, usually by the parent Co. Permatex, and it took TWO cans per wheel for a total of 5 cans the 5th being for missed spots if they were any, actually I only used 4 to get 99.9% off. You clean the wheels off with whatever you like to get off the oily & brake residue, just get fairly clean then set the wheels where the Gasket remover will not monkey up anything with overspray and spray on the remover, moderatly thick, but not running down, let set for a half hour and examine the wheels, you will see massive blistering bubbles. I used a piece of wood shaped like a putty knife to scrape this bubeled parts and re-applyed the remover, same results etc. etc. for actually a total of 4 aplications, Typically just the hose will peel it off after its blistered.
(two cans worth). thats why I say 5 is needed, because around the flange it was tiny bits to finish up, I should have removed the tire but not having a decent air compressor decided not to dismount them. You will be pleased with the results, the powdercoat "ALL" came off. A word of caution, the remover is potent stuff, so keep it off your hands, go to Harbor Freight or wherever and get some above the wrist rubber gloves and avoid the caustic propertys of the remover. Honestly, I did it without gloves, but was constantly washing and rinsing my hands, would have rather had gloves. This will work on All powder coating, though caution is advised, don't overspray onto something not intending to strip as it will monkey up the finish, though aluminum it works well with. Hope thats some help for you winter time restorers.

Thanks Gohot,
I plan on stripping my wheels this winter. Not sure how I'm going to hose them off in the below freezing temps though. Did you mask off the tires at all, and if so, what with?
Thanks.

I tried that same stuff on a set of 1985 RZ350 wheels..it did absolutely nothing...I tried several other products as well, none of them worked...Ended up paying $75.00 to get them done!!! Operator said he had never seen paint that hard to remove.... I guess my point is just get one can, see if it's gonna work!!!! BTW..I found out about that gasket remover on powdercoat site(s) on the internet...it seems that a LOT of folks use it and that it works really well......just my luck though, it didn't work on mine, as toxic as it is !!!

You know, I had a difficult time with My late model X1 swingarm, it was a bugger to get it to blister and soften, even waiting quite a while for the bubble effect to occur, but a total of three cans did it, actually two and a half. Heres another thing I noticed with this stuff, the cleaner it was the better it worked with tough stuff like the swingarm, otherwise all the other stuff I did was really fairly rapid. Your right, some times theres something that just dosen't strip well. Well then going online, you'v sought the proper information, just wasn't your day. .....an RZ huh.....you got my attention...........and....how did the RZ turn out after all? Now those are RAPID!!! Also it did not appear to hurt the tires at all, though both need replacement before going back on the road, so I wasn't to comcerned on that point, but there was no apparent harm to the rubber.

Just curious... how do the wheels look without the powdercoat?

I am thinking about doing this but was hoping to see some pics of a set with the powdercoat stripped.

thanks all!
