For a long time I've had a slight shake in the front brakes, like the rotor is warped, but the dealer looked at the rotor and said it's fine. There have been dark spots evenly spaced approximately every 2 inches around the rotor.

Yesterday I replaced the front pads, took off Nissin pads 90% worn, not quite worn through the lines in the pads yet though. Replaced them with regular OEM pads. I tested them during a quick trip around town yesterday and everything seems to work fine.

This morning on my way to work all of a sudden I felt the brakes drag without any input from me, I looked down and saw the rotor glowing red. The dragging feeling went away quickly and I kept coasting without applying the brakes, to allow the rotor to cool. After a quick check of everything it all looks good - and it appears that the brakes dragging and heating the rotor scrubbed all of the "spots" off of the rotor.

Any idea what would cause the dragging this morning? Is this something I should look further into or just not worry about it as long as it doesn't happen again?

btw it's a 2000 X1 - stock rotor

When you replaced the pads, did you push the pistons back all the way before installing the new pads? Sometimes dirt and muck accumulate in that area and can hinder free movement of the pistons.

About the brake fluid, did you replace it or, at least, check the level before riding?

yes, I pushed the pistons all the way in.

I also replaced all the fluid. Fluid level is perfect according to the sight glass on the master cylinder. My manual calls for DOT5 fluid, but the master cylinder says DOT4. I used 4.

You say you replaced all the fluid. All means ALL. DOT 5 residue will create sludge when mixed with new DOT4.

The 2000 and up manual should say DOT 4.

It will sludge! I helped a neighbor work on his older Harley, he put in DOT 5 because that was what the master cylinder called for. Apparently, a previous owner had already upgraded to DOT 4. Boy did *that* make a mess...
