I just bought a 2003 XB9R, after riding it for about 15 minutes at 45mph or more it gradually starts making a sound like the front cylinder is knocking. It starts quiet and gets louder the farther you go. You can stop and let it idle and you can hear it gradually go away, ride again and it comes back. It never does it when you first start it, only after riding at over 45mph for a while. Please help!!! |

Did you check the oil level?
And some of these bikes are just plain noisy. Mine is pretty quiet when it starts, but once the oil gets up to temperature, it makes all sorts of scary tappy noises. It has done this since new, 25k miles ago. |

I know of a few XB's that sound like they're ready to come apart, but the owners continue rackin' up miles with no issue.
Recently a customer picked up a new CityX and complained about the "noise." His was actually one of the quietest motors we've ever come across 
If it's sluggish, blowin' smoke out the exhaust, consuming an excessive amount of oil, blowing a lot of oil through the crankcase breather, or making a sound that can also felt as an excessive vibration, I'd get it checked out. Otherwise, that's just the nature of the beast. |

My brother keeps telling me that's just the way they are. We also had a mechanic friend today that said the same thing. It just scared us since this is our first XB, didn't want to blow the engine.
So we'll keep riding her til she won't go anymore!!! |

Mine was loud and bothered me up until I put a Jardine on there.
That'd drowned it out but REAL good...

Gonna do a few things to it over the winter and the Jardine is one of them.

Ride it hard and shut it down straight away.
Check your front plug which is easy to get at by removing the three torx screws from the LSS and then using a 5/8 spanner to remove the plug.
If its white or whiteish then the front cylinder is running a little lean which could benefit from adjusting the front map, resetting the tps, or replacing the engine temp sensor. |

Metrickjb! if the noise comes from the right side around the front of rhe engine, it is the cam gears.the drive gear is a selative gear, alot of them are on the max spec.also the lifters can make noise as the engine oil gets hot.i have never seen one give an issues.i have 46,00kms on mine and i drive the bag off it every day. |
