I have been hearing an exhaust leak and been getting a rather warm leg since I bought my bike at the beginning of the summer. I finally decided to take a look at it. To make a long story short, someone, somewhere along the line replaced the nuts for the rear cylinder exhaust w/nylon lock nuts. I assume, because the studs were basically stripped. I tried tightening them down and they just basically spun and actually backed off making things worse. Before I tried tightening them I could grab the pipe and it was noticibly loose in the flange. So...I need to replace the studs. Anyone have any tips/tricks on removing them without snapping/shearing them off and making things a massive pain in the ass? | ||

I agree. Be gentle and work it back and forth like you are tapping threads. Lots of lubrication is not optional it is manditory. Also if you spray the lube on the threads let it sit for a bit and hit the end of the stud shaft with a hammer sharply to help break loose the bond between the stud and head. Keep us posted. | ||

I wussed out and took it to a Harley guy by my house. I didn't want to be out of commission for a few weeks waiting for a Jims tool if I broke one of the studs off. He said he got one out without too much trouble but broke the other. Still only took him a few hours. Cost about $150 with parts and labor. Runs great and my right leg doesn't smell like exhaust anymore. On another subject, I want to get a new muffler. I have the stock one now. I looked at V&H I don't see one that will fit but I though I had seen things on this forum somewhere that people HAD V&H's on their 98 S1Ws. I also looked on the D&D site and didn't see one that would fit. Does anyone have any other input? Any opinions on "the best" and where I could get one? Hey Orman. I had and have V&H's and like their sound. The first was a regular one and I think it was repacked and sounded somewhat loud but with a nice deep bark. The one now is an SS2 model with a more subdued sound but growls a bit with some aggressive throttle. Never had a D&D but have read posts they are louder. You may see some in great shape here for sale in the classifieds or look to Ebay or the sponsers may have somthing to your satisfaction. |
